Sudanese braids
Arent these thin braids the same somalis do, maybe it has really ancient cushitic origins, couldnt find any trace of this in ethiopia tho, oromos and habesha both do these style of braids that originated from the habesha highlands
Theres also this hairstyle which originated in Harar and Im certain its something that medieval somalis started, oromos around harar and some somalis still used to do it in the 20th century here are pictures
oromo
Somali
Here is a drawing the women of harar with this hairstyle in mid 19th century, they look like they have some kind of colored cloth wrapped around their head like that somali woman in the drawing above, it looks like some kind of masar to me but most old drawings and pictures of somali women they dont wear the masar like this, this hairstyle was probably pretty convenient for the labor women used to do centuries ago and it survived inside harar and passed onto generations in some somali tribes, oromos who later settled around the city seem to have also adopted it
Somali women wear head coverings and hijab so theres not many pictures of hairstyles, and i dont think there is any universal hairstyle culture proper to somalis except these thin cushitic braids, here is a drawing of a somali girl with these braids
I noticed Somalis have never really cared about hairstyle, at least for the past couple centuries, all the pictures online is just people growing their hair out without any special kind of hairstyle like this and just combing it out
