Colourism in the Somali community is a fake Agenda.

That is being set in motion by individual Somali women (you don’t hear the guys say this) because they want to emulate Black culture and their pathetic disgusting victim mentality.

I have lived in Somalia for years and not once did I hear any insult towards my sisters who are all dark skin, the first time I heard about it was back in 2017 by an African American woman online. Now it is 2021 and some Somali girls are falsely pushing this narrative.

There is no way I will accept this false agenda that’s being pushed in order for us to be forcefully assimilated to the “Black struggle” we came from a lineage of great warriors and queens 💯
I think you live in a bubble and that’s not a shocker to me since your a Somali men. The Somali community is hella colourist! Why do women and men bleach 🥴🥴 it’s not a fake agenda it’s real.

Somalis beg their family to send lacaag through dahabshiil. Only a few can afford skin bleaching.

A few women bleaching != colorism.

Beauty standards != colorism.

We don’t put down darkskin women.

It’s only only a “few” that skin bleach. I’d estimate at least 70% of women in Somaliland skin bleach. It’s become more affordable in the past years, so you’ll see girls as young as 14/15 bleaching their skin.

Somalis in the diaspora may not have a preference for light skin. But it’s definitely a beauty standard for folks back home.

I would say 80% in Somaliland and Djibouti! They even use plastic bag to make the bleaching cream more potent! I think light skin is the standard back home and in the diaspora. It is what it is. Came to terms with it and not going to limit myself and stay within a community that doesn’t see me as the prize.

Listen am not victimizing myself. It’s simply the truth. The reason why your so triggered is because your either a perpetrator of colourism within our community or simply a light skin men that has no self awareness of what’s going on!

Lol you are literally what the OP was describing, i am neither lightskin nor am i perpetrating to colourism in community stop projecting your insecurities onto me. You need to gain confidence and stop pushing these agendas copying the other communities you see when they argue about it and bring it to us.

Where is the statistical proof that 70% of the whole country of Somaliland and the entire country of Djbouti bleaches? You are pulling numbers out of your ass and making it seem like we're all the bad guys because you not confident. See a therapist instead of making the entire community look bad. Lightskin vs Darkskin is not a fight thats common to us just in the western diaspro but now you want to make it seem like it is.

Bleaching is an epidemic all across Africa, but we rarely get stats on it, and our Nations are not all that stable to allow for an inquiry.

I wonder why people deny that it's pervasive. :mjpls:

Here's a study on the rates of bleaching in a select number of African Countries.

Source: https://theconversation.com/women-o...-bleaching-creams-worldwide-every-year-153178

The practice is not new. It became popular in many African countries in the 1950s; today, about 77% of Nigerians, 27% of Senegalese and 35% of South African women bleach their skin. Indian caste-based discrimination was outlawed in 1950, but dark-skinned women (and men) are still persecuted – and fair skin remains a distinguishing social factor, associated with purity and elite status.

Listen, calling colourism within our community as a « fake agenda » is quite laughable tbh as if Somalis that has been colonized is immune to colourism LOL I honestly want what your smoking…. Ahh to be purposefully ignorant. Btw your a man! Colourism impacts you differently. As a women, that’s dark skin I can tell you that bleaching to find a suitor is pretty much normalized. Saying that your pretty for a dark skin is a thing and that is part of colourism because people are TAUGHT that dark skin is inherently bad but I have somewhat past their expectations due to my « beauty for a dark skin girl! » Somali men prefer and would rather choose a light skin women to marry which is pretty much standard wether that’s in the diaspora or back home. I went to Djibouti multiple times and I can tell you 70% bleach but you would claim that am pulling figures out my ass but are you among women? Do you know what women do to make themselves lighter and suitable for marriage? Hmmm so instead of saying am projecting onto you question why are women and MEN lighten themselves. Did they just wake up one day and say hmmm let me become lighter and make myself susceptible to cancer? As you know Djibouti isn’t big it’s a small country and my family owns a store… Soo i see it!

What do you mean by gain confidence? The ones who need to gain confidence are the dark people bleaching themselves to become light. not her. If she's still darkskin then that means she hasn't touched any diana. I'm not even darkskin and I agree with her.
You are so dense and dishonest. Colorism and bleaching among Somalis is real. Did you not see that thread of the male Somali singer that bleached himself snow white? This isn't darkskin vs lightskin, it's not a fight, it's just noticing our unconscious biases. We've known colorism before there ever was a word to describe it. Lmfao

Lol you people use 1 person and generalize an entire community, there are people who bleach but for their own benefits. There is not a serious colourism pandemic going on if you think so you just a victim and want to push an agenda. You will see 1-3 people are judge an entire community off them,

Somalis love to be dramatic and mimic others its no surprise, get out your emotions and face life abaayo. The problem with all you women is your perspective off life is through emotion. I can tell the user above is hurt go to a therapist instead of trying to down your community for some over exaggerated problem. Nobody is dense you blowing shit out of proportion, 70% of the country bleaches? Yea i'll wait for some statistics before i believe that

Man, just open your eyes. This isn't hard to see, we can actual have a thoughtful discussion if you drop the whole "victimization" and "dramatic" thing.
We'll never know how many people bleach for sure but it's not hard to tell. You can look at the cracks in their knuckles, their pasty faces. and weirdly dark lips. Back home, a Somali bride at her wedding will use makeup 4 shades lighter than her face. This is the norm. A lot of them want to look their favorite Bollywood star.

Somaliland is skin bleach capital of Somalia I have to agree with that

It’s actually real. Maybe you’ll understand if you have a dark skin child. And they’ll be treated differently than the lighter children…

90% of you have never stepped foot in Somalia. Skin bleaching is an issue only in certain parts of Somalia. Majority of Somalis back home are dark. I’m not saying colourism doesn’t exist at all but majority of these people complaining about colourism amongst Somalis are blowing it way out of proportion.

Liesss! If they had the means they would have lighten themselves ages agoooo. Women go into debt in Djibouti for Diana! They ask men to send them money in order to get the lighten cream to become lighter! Like I said I went to Djibouti multiple times since my mother and father live in Djibouti so I know what am talking about! I know women that have lighten themselves 5 shades lighter than their original skin because they were getting married and had pressure to become lighter in Canada. I know Somali parents that tell their children do not get married to a dark skin Somali women! Not because of their «ugly features ; Somalis love to use this as a cope out », character, compatibility but simply because shes dark skin. I lived my whole life as a dark skin Somali women I know the nuances and tones and how people treat me because am dark. God forbid if your fat and dark! SubhnAllah it’s crazy but there’s no point to continue this discussion because am sure none of you guys are dark skin.
