The reason why most African countries are failures is in large part due to European colonialism. When the Europeans arrived, they came with the intent to extract Africa's resources. In order to do this, they set up extractive institutions that would funnel much of Africa's wealth to a small colonial elite. When the Europeans left, the extractive institutions they set up were maintained by new native elites that the Europeans handed power to. The question the whole world always has asked, why are African men so lazy and easy to control? Why do they lack independence and innovation?

A lot of Africa's downfall stems from the fact that they're always taking shortcuts and never think about the long term effects of things. The original tribes in west africa that sold out the other tribes to the Europeans never thought of the long term consequence of Africa having a terrible public image for centuries.
