You see the problems in our diaspora communities, and we’re only 500k in the west. Imagine if we were 1M? With that population size racists trolls would graduate TikTok and make full length documentaries
If I were estimating, I would say roughly 750,000 in the West, and that's me being conservative. A larger population in the West is fine as it means access to greater opportunities for Somalis, who may be short-changed back home due to favouritism and nepotism based on tribal and personal relationships, not the actual talent level or integrity of a candidate. There are limited openings, and they receive limited investment and job support. The playing field is more balanced abroad. Trolls online are the least of our worries. The stifling of human capital and high unemployment in Somalia is more of a problem.Wallahi I don’t understand our people sometimes. You’re right about me only considering the diaspora living in Anglo speaking countries. I live in the US, and most of my diaspora relative also live in English speaking countries so I’ll take your word on your estimate
I also agree with you that the west is more meritocratic and is a better environment for the average Somali back home. You are not held back based on your clan, or by living in a lesser developed region
However my point was more about not wanting to increase our population due to having large families/high birthrates. I wasn’t focused on our diaspora increasing due to an increase in immigration from Somalia
I am pro Somali immigration to the west. In my experience Somali immigrants are rarely the ones who cause problems, often time it’s their children who grew up in the west that do
What I am against is having large families. They create many problems because parents can’t possibly give each child the attention they need when they have to balance work and caring for a large family
This increases the child’s chance of going down the wrong path in life. In those scenarios the kids aren’t even going to benefit from the opportunities that living in the west affords them
Also the comment I made about the trolls was made in jest and wasn’t to be taken seriously. I tried to include the emoji thing to display that, but I guess I failed lol

You brought up many valid points. However I do think parents are better equipped at dealing with the things you mentioned when they’re time is not spread thin across a very large family
The impact of no good role models, poverty, dangerous environment, etc is only made worst when a parent has to juggle the responsibility of a large family
I think our diaspora would benefit greatly if we adopted the mindset of “quantity not quality” when it came to family planning

Yea I 100% agree with what you said. I have relatives with large families where every kid is successful. Those families fit your description to a t
The dad is a well paid white collar professional, their mom is at minimum a high school grad and is highly involved in their child’s academic life
We’re a young diaspora that had many growing pains in the west. Inshallah as the next generation starts to create families, we’ll see even more success stories
Canada went to shit because everything became expensive due to the government, from food to housing to electricity to internet, etc. Has nothing to do with Indians. Trudeau will be gone after the election and things will hopefully go back to the good old days of pre-2017.
