I don’t follow Somali politics at all. Only discovered this because of a tweet earlier in the day. Full disclosure, my entire family from both sides are from Hargeisa. As a kid I hated the idea of a country called Somaliland – it was made up. Somalia with its blue flag and white star is what the world recognised and I shared that belief at that time.
I remember as a kid an elder uncle telling me expressing such opinions would get me into trouble. Fast forward many years later as an adult – I know fully support Somaliland independence. Somalia is a failed state, and unfortunately, I cannot see a future for it, especially since radical Islamist and corrupt qabilist have taken control.
These fightings are exactly the sort of divisions anti-landers want. A reason to damage & delay any hopes of Somalilands established goals for sovereignty. Once chaos and lawlessness spreads, religious fanaticism will spread its tentacles and before you know it – you have another failed Somalia 2.0. Be careful what you wish for.
Dialogue must take place. Somalilands government must respect the locals grievances while they must also respect the SL Govt. security concerns.
So tell me folks, in layman's terms - why are the locals fighting the government?
