Hassan Ali Khayre has a totally different rhetoric and clearly wants to attract investors and partners to Somalia.

He’s not much different in my opinion. He just parrots NGO/UN talking points and ideas about governance , giving people long technical speeches like 'we’re emerging from conflict,' 'we’re building systems,' etc. Then he throws in a vague mention of Somalia’s potential in passing. But people aren’t inspired by potential, they want to see ''tangible'' progress, actual results, and a clear track record.

That’s how you shift narratives , by rooting them in visible, lived reality.

Take someone like Cagjar , sure, he’s a political stooge in many ways, but at least he tries to communicate the development gains the Ogaden region has made over the last few years. He gives people real numbers, showcases actual projects, and highlights visible progress.

What I appreciate is that he does this to attract diaspora investment and foster inter-regional Somali partnerships. It’s not about glazing things over or running PR stunts , it’s about showing people what’s being done so they can participate and contribute.

From where the city was 15 years ago, there has been a transformation and economic development in many areas. It would have been impossible for this development to occur if the city was the most dangerous city in the world. The shit that happens in some parts of the Sahel and Congo is not even reported on and isn’t even comparable to Somalia (where most casualties are combatants btw). These negative nancies don’t read old articles, even a decade and half ago, street lights were absent, the port wasn’t even functioning in 2005, people had to go to neighbouring countries for basic medical care and even simple amenities like laundromats had disappeared during the 1990s and 2000s, family friendly parks were nonexistent, the beaches were no go areas because of the roaming millitia-men, every 100 meters there was an isbaaro, ancient mosques like Arba Rukun were derelict, the airport of Aden Adde was just an airstrip bringing in jaad.

Today the city has a booming airport, a booming seaport, modern hospitals, schools, universities, new giant mosques, packed beaches and restaurants, tons of entertainment spots, a reconstruction boom of residential homes and apartments, factories, a restored major stadium, you have major annual expos, events and festivals happening in the city etc but god forbid you look 10 years into the future and envision an even greater leap in progress, no that is simply blasphemy.

People forget or don’t want to acknowledge that Mogadishu has come this far with minimal foreign aid or large-scale foreign investment. Most countries recovering from conflict had billions poured into them. Somalia didn’t and still doesn’t except by their diaspora.

So yeah , Somalis have been living with these recycled media depictions for years. Meanwhile, they ignored the noise and kept investing, kept building, kept going back. People can keep repeating those tired narratives , it won’t erase the changes already happening.

We should definitely set up a petition to get this done , you’re absolutely right. They’ve renovated a lot across the city, but somehow that lighthouse area and the surrounding old town/beachfront have been completely neglected.

It honestly wouldn’t cost that much, and the renovation could be completed pretty quickly. But to be honest, I feel like buildings in general should be set back further from the beach. They should take notes from what Reer Waqooyi/Somaliland did with Berbera.

They built walkways, shaded benches, parking areas , all set back far enough to open up the coastline for everyone. You walk or drive a bit inland and then enjoy a clear, open view of the sea.


I remember seeing a tweet talking about this exact idea for Mogadishu , that a future government should prioritize it.

The Somali Federal government is the exact opposite of the Ethiopian government. Instead of trying to attract investment, it's fixated on attracting aid, so they project two completely different realities. Ethiopia, despite being deeply impoverished and underdeveloped, promotes itself as stable and open for business. Meanwhile, Somalia, an entrepreneurial, and a resource-rich country with a highly innovative wealth generating population, is deliberately portrayed by its own government as dysfunctional, dangerous, and destitute. Why? Because that image keeps foreign aid flowing, extends their political shelf life, and justifies the ongoing foreign presence propping them up.

Meanwhile, most of Somalia is actually functional, self-reliant, stable and operates independently from the FGS, including parts of Mogadishu through the Banadir Administration.

Every time I see Hassan Sheikh and his cronies speak at international forums, it’s embarrassing. His pitch to the world is always some variation of: “We are poor, please help us,” or “Our big achievement is that we went from a transitional government to a fragile state.” Like… seriously?

He doesn’t even try to highlight Somalia’s actual strengths, our expanding trade links, our fast-growing economy, our remarkably resilient and innovative private sector, or the booming business ecosystem. He doesn’t challenge false narratives or show tangible proof of Somalia’s progress, even though there’s a long list of self-funded, Somali-led developments happening across the country with almost no foreign investment.

All he ever parrots are tired NGO talking points backed by fake stats, as if the FGS actually monitors or controls the economy at all. It really is embarrassing, and it totally undersells the real story of Somalia.

If we don't get a competent cabinet next year I will be for the total overthrow of the FGS and I think I'm not the only one who thinks about this

Imo, the thing that makes him stand out is his business background and education. Almost none of the current politicians have the same business sense hence why Kheyre was able to recognize that Somalia's private sector is thriving and high trust. He also has connections with Norway and is educated over there which may mean he knowns how to steer Somalia towards the Norwegian model you and a couple others talked about, a good hybrid system so to speak.

Then again, I could be talking nonsense and Kheyre is another big mouthed politician but to me he looks different from the usual HSM or Farmaajo type. You are spot on about Cajgar however.

It's incredible how much there is to do in Mogadishu and how much the city has changed, yet this guy only films that garbage lighthouse and beach and some AKs... I'm tired of these people and this image they're portraying of us wAllahi. Do we even have a minsitry of Tourism ? What are they doing about this, if they even are aware of it. By now it should be clear every tourists go to that nasty beach and lighthouse and not liido and other beautiful places in the city.

This problem could easily be fixed by cleaning that lighouse area and setting up tourism agencies to do guided visits of the city. Shameful situation wlhi, and it doesn't look like the government even cares.

You're absolutely right ,Hassan Sheikh doesn’t come from a background in civil administration, law enforcement, or business like Kheyre. His roots are in the education sector, having studied at Lafoole, which is why his main accomplishment is SIMAD University.


And I’m more than certain his rise to political leadership had more to do with his connections to the UN and international circles than any tangible experience in governance or statecraft. That’s likely why his entire pitch is framed in NGO-speak , transitional state, fragile institutions, donors, aid dependency, etc.

I can't give a precise number but I'm sure it will be cheap compared to other projects. they renovated many monuments if Mogadishu so I don't think it's a problem of funds, they just seem to not care at all.
