Businessmen stop taking their bulk goods out of Berbera Port

Businessmen stopped taking their goods out of Berbera port due to an dispute with port operator DP World which changed the exchange rate between Somaliland Shilling and Dollar from $1 Dollar=7000SHSL to $1=8500SHSL.

This means the port stopped operations on 12 March as traders boycotted the introduced exchange rate by DP World and their goods tariffed.

Berbera should try and get rid of DPW like Puntland is trying to do. Why allow foreigners to capture your goods and run it for you, whilst the city is not benefiting from this partnership but the selected few Somali individuals and DPW do.

They need to run DPW out of Somalia.

halwa this company is renowned for stagnating ports throughout the region.

Djibouti kicked them out while only in charge of the Doraleh terminal.

But Somalis are idiots. It is a joint Ethio-UAE endeavor. The true victim is the Somali bar the criminals that auctioned a port like Berbera for 10-30 million and a salary each months.

That’s exactly it! It doesn’t matter how wealthy and amazing they are or how many ports they have transformed.

The matter of the fact is that they are using the Somali ports, they have taken our away our sole breadwinner, they are controlling us and whatever money comes out of it, Bosaso or Berbera does not see it. Where is the signed money deal that Gaas took when he signed the Bosaso port over? I don’t see it invested in Puntland? Gaas ran away with it.

Berbera needs to fight like Bosasso did, thought I don’t condone killing but any other method will do that will enable us to get in control of our own PORTS!

Correction :

DP world don’t invest in small ports like Bosaso port it’s subsidary P&O ports do .

It is the same thing. They are both under the same umbrella. The issue here is not about the differentiation of the ports but the fact that they are controlling our ports and certain Somali individuals are selling it to the highest bidder.

And what do you mean by “small ports like Bosaso”... is that a hint of arrogance that i smell? :gnzbryw:

Don't know where you're grinning your information from seems kinda false beggars the current exchange rate is 1$ = 9000SLSH and sometimes 9500

So I don't know where you're getting the other 2 figures from it game l hasn't been 7000 for 4 years

I sense some jealousy as P&O contract which was worth 330mil didn't do nothing for 2 years. And you're seeing the construction of the port plus all the equipments brought in by DPW while bosaaso is still a smugglers Terminal.

Have you seen Djibouti before DPW it was a rats nest and were not even able to build anything let alone a port of international standings then DPW came along built them a fancy new port then got arrogant after they spent $2bn and the local population still has poor living standards.
You just have to look at the town of Berbera and how its changing now

Good for you people. We are the only ones with brains right here. No sane individual would want anyone to take over their port for the next 30 years.

Puntland will keep on fighting and resisting this dictatorship. We want no strings attached. We want a Chinese company to come and fix the port and then they are out.

The same thing can happen for Bosaso like Berbera but only if it is the right people doing it.

Sirlance sums could be at odds but the crux is that it relates to tariffs/exchange rate.

Somaliland businessmen have been threatened to accept it and clear goods they refused or get penalised.

Are you sure about the Chinese, you do know the Chinese have built a reputation where they build stuff and if the country can't make one payment they take over fully.

Ask Sri Lanka who couldn't make one payment now China owns their port and the land around it for 100years

Anything the Chinese build is not for free, ask Kenya how the Chinese treat the indegionous

The Chinese built our airport, so why not give them the job of building the Bosaso port.

You’re trying to differentiate people. China and Arab countries are not better than the other. It is just that China knows how to mind its own business.

halwa he doesn't know and is oblivious that UAE is in direct competition with Somali and other Red Sea ports in the region hence their policy of buying it cheap using leverage in the case of Berbera, Ethiopia and bribery forcing a bad deal on people to stop competing with UAE.

Regarding the Somaliland Shilling to Dollar exchange DP World send letter to Ministry complaining that the exchange rate at the port were way lower than in the actual free market. Hence they acknowledged it and raised it accordingly.
