Even if Russia manages to rally and not lose ground, they failed to take Kyiv or even Kherson.

I believe the Russians are in it for the long game of attrition, after all that is what they specialise in.

Kyiv has always been a Russophobic city just like the rest of West Ukraine, so it doesn't matter. I've read that the reason why Kyiv wasn't captured early on is because of political dissidents/hackers in Belarussia interfering in the logistics and movement of military supplies on the railways into Ukraine.

This is explains the poor logistics which hindered the efforts of the Russians in taking Kyiv and its surrounding districts.

As for Kherson, we'll just have to see what happens, the Russians can't just neglect it.

The bolded part is pure nonsense. Western Ukraine (Ukrainian speaking part of country) is accurate as they look at Russians and Russian speakers with disdain, Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians alike. However, Kiev has always been exception. The city has continuously been tolerant or at least more open and friendlier towards Russia(ns) on average than western Ukraine.

Despite the Euromaidan revolution and Russia's incursion/annexation of Ukraine in 2014, Kiev remained a majority Russian speaking city. Most media remained in Russian, despite attempts by the gov't to limit its influence. Schools alike, formal jobs etc. All by choice of the residents, as no one is prevented from using Ukrainian. The russophobic rhetorics was mainly limited towards the Russian gov't and not towards Russian people nor language. This obviously changed after the latest invasion. Even then, the gov't had to ban/limit russian language at schools as people where still going there.
