Somalis used to hunt a lot too for ivory, emptied the wildlife and arguably did more damage than these european hunters, Brits tried to stop it but to no avail
One of the main reasons why Baardheere was sacked is because they banned the ivory trade
My dad said he saw some white poachers kill a rhino in the 70s, not abnormal but it was regarded as an odd thing to do. Most likely illegal.
