I don’t understand why ‘blackness’ is so limited in comparison to being ‘Asian’ or being ‘white’. People in those cultures identify with their ethnicity more than their continent/skin colour.

The obsession with a singular ‘Blackness’ is a western phenomenon. Yes it is very important to consider because of how western racism operates.

But on the flip side, ‘black’ people who act differently from the standard AA blackness are seen as ‘white washed’ a ‘coon’ or even just ‘not black enough’.

I blame this on the fact that AA are the face of ‘blackness’. Being African is a much better identifier for Somalis. We are Black by skin, but ‘Black’ culture is synonymous with AA culture.

AAs are the face of blackness and have a right to be since it’s Western new world peoples of African descent who were first called ‘black’. Somalis and every other African ethnicity only identified with their ethnic origins. Blackness is a wholly Western concept coined by people descended from enslaved ancestors.

I have a very unpopular opinion.

But I think if Somalis were as large as Bantus, Arabs or Cadaans we would be considered our own seperate identity, let me land.

Somalis are roughly 30-35 Million as Total Population which is baby numbers compared to the most dominant ethnic groups and yet despite how much of a numerical minority we are people always questions us and always talk about how “distinct” we look compared to others and people have tuned in on the almost Signature Look Somalis have.

Now if Somalis were 100 Million I wholeheartedly believe that we would be considered our own separate race or at least different from Bantus.

Somalis are small yet people comment on how we look and that’s just 30 Million people and even smaller since we’re divided into diaspora but imagine if we were 100 million…..
