We were on every type of government assistance you could think of. You know what we did? We pulled ourselves out of that poverty and now we own a beautiful house in the suburbs and me and my younger sister go to one of the best universities in the country on full rides.

What also helped is that my parents were extremely strict with who I could hang out with and was clear I could not play in the apartment without them being able to see me so I couldn’t come across bad influences

I think saying “poverty” alone is an oversimplification. From what I can tell, the deeper issue is a lack of opportunities caused by social exclusion and the kind of alienation many immigrant youth feel from wider Swedish society. They experience profound social marginalization.

One of the biggest problems is how immigrants are settled into segregated, low-income areas , basically creating ghettos. Compare that to Norway, where immigrants are distributed more evenly into regular housing among native populations. It makes a big difference in long-term outcomes.

I’ve seen a few Reddit threads where Norwegians pointed out this very contrast.

Norway doesn't really have Swedish gang culture or struggles with rampant gang crime, high rates of crime or gun crime, knifing etc similarly with Denmark although they fear the Swedish exportation of it.

The only real organized gangs you will see in Norway is mostly norwegian Biker gangs that move cross nationally that have existed for decades.

From papers i have read online and on reddit, Norway has had a seperate immigration policy than Sweden and a different housing market than them. Sweden lump assylum seekers/low income immigrants into the same areas that eventually form into ghettos, whereas norway seperate asysylum/refugees that arrive into different muncipalities and cities and they are assigned to and have no say on choosing where to live.

The housing markets are also different . Sweden has housing for the poor but Norway doesn't. So there is no real segregated concentration of poor ethnic people living in the same areas which is what creates the hotbed of gang and crime activity.

And honestly, the U.S. , despite its own flaws , does this part better. The labor market is more flexible, and immigrants can find work more easily. There are fewer barriers to starting businesses, schools, or community orgs tailored to their needs, which helps foster self-reliance and mobility.


Also, the broader American cultural climate is more open to immigration , especially in urban areas , so it’s easier to integrate socially and economically.

You won’t see Somalis running drug cartels, organized networks, or setting up turf wars , that’s just not how they operate because there is no communal support for that type of stuff. Most of the stuff Somali youth get caught up in tends to be petty crime, which all types of youth engage in across the board.

What really gets me is how Somalis don’t seem to understand the value of privacy. There’s this strange hunger for visibility , to be seen, to be heard , even when it adds no value and ends up backfiring.

And the annoying part is that it’s always the most wayward or unserious individuals who put themselves in front. That girl doesn’t represent Somali girls in Sweden at all , she doesn’t act, dress, or carry herself like the average Somali girl there who’s focused, modest, wears her hijab, has a close-knit group of friends, and lives a lowkey life.

It’s extremely rare to find a Somali girl actually involved in gangs anywhere in the diaspora, which is why this one just comes off like a poser , someone trying to seem edgy or cool without even understanding what she’s projecting.

I genuinely think there’s something deeper going on with people like this , whether it’s an identity crisis, low self-esteem, or just chasing validation in all the wrong ways. But sadly, it’s always these types who end up pushed to the front and then used to paint a whole community.

Heard countless of Somalis leaving Sweden and pulling their children out of Stockholm to rise them in peaceful and quite environment. These people who are parents to these ciyaalsuuq out in the streets are making it harder for other hardworking somalis trying to progress and make a living for themselves and their families, I guarantee you if these parents atleast supervised their kids more majority of our problems in the west would be solved.
