My mom’s family on both sides were those MJs who moved down to Koonfur during the Early Modern era. On her maternal side, they even married into the Raxanweyn; specifically, Reer Maalin Weyn of Baydhabo. That’s actually where my mtDNA N1a1a3 comes from. My mother can speak Af-Maay, as can many of her relatives, including her own mother, who is half Raxanweyn but paternally MJ.
Growing up, my grandmother loved teasing me by speaking Af-Maay. She’d say some random sentence, and I’d just stare at her blank-faced. She’d laugh and say, "Keekkeke! Mi ii fahmikaro. Af-Maxaa bas loo yakhanaa." Kekekeke. I still remember the first time I ever heard it—I legit asked my mom if my habo was speaking Russian or something.
But then my mother was like, "Listen closely when she speaks and you will begin to notice it's Somali but just kinda different." then I noticed that if I really carefully listened or they spoke slowly I understood at least some of what they were saying. It's like Af-Maxaa if you got rid of all the Xas, Cas and Khas and threw in some different words for various things.
