Ethiopia would rather go back to using its traditional port in Aseb or buy land from Sudan and build a port it controls. Berbera was viable until relations with Sudan and Eritrea improved. Once this happened, old trade routes were bound to come back. Berbera is still viable but the volumes it will be receiving will be smaller. It will service DDSI but will miss out on Ethiopia proper’s lucrative trade. Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti are more reliable partners than an unrecognized state under Mogadishu’s legal jurisdiction.
