Aussom is toast. They need something like 358 million dollars altogether ? And of that 90 million is perviously owed and 93 million is needed urgently apparently. Yet they only have 15 million dollars that have been committed so far. There is nobody whos gonna pickup that slack.

The arrears are like 180 million (90 million from 2025 alone; 90 million between 2022 and 2024).

The yearly cost is 166 million and they only have less than 20 million pledged from China, Japan and AU reserve facility.

So they need 150 million over 5 years which is 750 million dollars.

--------------------
The AU is trying to go back to the UN to cover 75% of the yearly budget but there's no legal obligation for UNSC to do anything if they are not in agreement. US has rejected to cover it using UN funds.

I agree that it's looking increasingly likely that AUSSOM will be scrapped. EU and US are both scaling down at the same time due to other priorities.

with somalia always assume status quo being maintained. There will always be some last minute funding deal and extension of mandate. these funds are pennies to west to contain the chaos that is somalia.

my guess is with all the aid cut. they will put more and more stipulations on fgs for funds. the biggest being ensuring people dont migrate and the second being accepting people who are deported and signing agreements to speed up process

The more likely option is they scale down the mission. There will probably be something.

maybe but will be big surprise. the west knows state of fgs. al shabab ideology can spread like wild fire there are major disenfranchised unemployed youth in Ethiopia and kenya.

75% of mission funded. they wont scrap everything for 25%. the muslim war on terror was dying down and west pivoting but all changed after october 7th and middle east catching fire again.

I don't think they will scrap everything.
If they want to add troop stipend to UNSOS budget then that will mean the logistics can't cover as many troops so the numbers have to drop. So then the mission will be covered entirely by UN funds and that might have some political issues. That's where they might just scrap it because even resolution 2719 only calls for 75% funding. AU/FGS were trying to add another 75% ontop for the troop salaries. I don't think it will be accepted that UN funds cover more than 75%. If AU finds 80-100 million for troop salaries for example then that will be it and the troop numbers will reduce by 35-50%.
