For two reason:
1. Because they fear that if the secular Assad is removed democratically or otherwise; an ‘Islamist’ will take over and they will ‘suffer’ under such a rule.

They would definitely suffer. No need to put it into quotes. Alawites would be the equivalent of Tutsis in 1994. Then Christians and other religious minorities would be next. Assad is Syria’s Saddam Hussein. Without secular rule they will end up like a Sunni Iran
