I grew up being told by relatives it was taboo to speak of it, it grew into me

It's taboo for no reason lack of true Islamic understanding is the cause of stuff like that.
You should start easing up about it and make your family understand that it's a normal thing.

I'm surprised at how some here make a big deal of not fasting. In my city a number of muslim somalis and even non somali muslims usually don't fast and don't pretend to fast. Some of them have excuses but a lot of them simply don't have any form of excuse and simply don't fast for no reason what so ever.

My hooyo told me some uncles on my father’s side of the family never used to fast. And she always suspected that he was like that too, but since he would go out daily we would never know for sure. But at least he had some xishood about it (if he didn’t fast) unlike some of my uncles.
