Being Somali is based on ethnicity not religion.
Islam has a long strong connection with the Somali community for historical and cultural reasons. But because islam is a universal religion it can’t be consider an ethno religion like Judaism. Judaism are considered an ethno religion since they can date their ancestry back and forth. While Somalis have a long clan ancestry thats restrictive towards their paternal roots. Now, I know people will say Somali culture has some Islamic principles. Which is true. Somali culture have other things thats rooted to Cushitic culture.
I support the idea that being Somali is based on ethnicity not religion.

But this shouldn’t take away how the majority of Somalis are Muslim.
Yeah that was basically what i was trying to articulate before. Just i would emphasise the role of islam in somali culture

Personally I don't believe in Islam but I don't eat pig/khamri. I've been like this for years secretly just don't pray/fast when family/friends are around... I just don't believe in religions all are man made in my opinion. If anyone wants to give me dawah in the comments don't waste ur time with me. I wana know if other ppl think like me any questions let me know.

How you view yourself and how others perceive you in terms of identity are two separate things. One persons definition of a Somali can be different from someone else.
