Are they wrong for this ? Relatives of mine are keeping their grandmother in the dark about her imminent death.

the doctor doesn’t realize that the family are incorrectly interpreting to his patient, the Ayeeyo.

The family is not being truthful with the ayeeyo. Doctors have told them that she only got weeks to live. Yet they haven’t told her that. They just took her home. The nurses will treat her at home. The family refused a hospice.

She doesn't need a hospice. Her family got her. This is how it has been done for 100s of years in Somalia. She will die peacefully at home. Ayeeyo is ready to hit the road to Heaven

Im speaking about the fact that the family is keeping her in the dark about her imminent death.

Doctors said “she’s done”. The family tell her “we are taking you home”.

Of course they should NOT tell her. For what purposes? They should keep it from her. But also gently tell her make your Ibaadas, Saqaraatul Mout is knocking ayeeyo

Why wouldn't they tell her?

Atleast if she knows beforehand she can prepare herself and make the best of the time she got

I don’t think they’re wrong. The timing isn’t certain. Let her live her last days among family. She may have longer than they even say

It is unethical NOT to tell her.

This is a grown up person who has seen life and death in her time so she can handle the truth.

We had a similar issue in our family and felt we couldn't tell our uncle about his terminal cancer so we got the clan elders to do it the old-fashioned Somali way complete with Quraan-saar. He is at peace and knows his days are fast dwindling. Telling him lifted such a heavy burden from all our shoulders.
