Are Somalis a supraethnicity?

If you look at Arabs, they are not really considered to be a singular ethnicity. They are pretty much an ethnicity of many ethnicities ie. supraethnicity or I've even heard the term panethnicity. Do you think this could also be true for Somalis? I think the problem is people see us all looking the same and speaking the same language and think that can't hold true for us.

For example, lets you take a Majeerteen, Hawiye, and a Rahanweyn (it's Ramadan don't turn into fkd). Now from a historical standpoint there is very little mixing or connection between the three. From a cultural perspective there are also different practices and traditions within the three. Even from a linguistic view, the Majeerteen would probably not understand the af-Maay speaker.

This is why I think modern anthropological viewpoints of Somalis are just wrong. I always hear people say we are one people yet how can we be so separated. Maybe that notion itself is the problem. It's almost unnatural when you think about it. This idea that Somalis are a singular group of people couldn't be further from the truth.

I am not saying we should hate one another or continue fighting. My point is that reinforcing these ideas will just cause more damage in the long run. By recognizing our differences is how we can become stronger, not by forcing an identity that only exists due to the modern nation state era. If someone identifies themselves by qabil nowadays you will have people call him backwards or uneducated. Yet in reality none of their ancestors were calling themselves Somali. It's the truth. We are all Muslim at the end of the day that's all that matters, but I just think we need to reframe what qabil and being Somali is. We are a nation of many nations. When you look at it like that, you will realize why we are the way we are.

If people can identify me as a somali but can't pinpoint my qabiil then that's your answer. We are people with the same genetics, religion and language, I think that's something that we need to proud of. There are only handful of countries where the people are from the same ethnicity, power in numbers and that 🤣. I'm not against qabiil and my qabiil is well known but you'd have to be a retard to not see that qabyaalad has significantly hindered our opportunities.

Somalis are indeed very united just not in a political way, we had rules for when we went to war that other did not have.
If two clans had a dispute, their respective elders will meet and sort out the issue.
We never enslaved each other and sold fellow somalis from different clans as slaves to ajnabis.

You say forcing a unified identity is wrong and untrue, what about us all being the same if untrue?
We have one language
one religion
one origin story
one tribe
We are one of the most homogenous groups in africa, the only reason we have such strong divisions is because of scarce resources which forces people to fall back on their clan to survive due to the failure of the government.

Why would you compare us to arabs who are not even one ethnicity and have dialects which cannot even understand each other? The arabs are a bunch of ethnic groups who were conquered by arabians and forced into one cultural sphere. That's very different from somalis

Genetically and culturally we are the same, which is why we buttheads. It's very common in a clan dominated society, everyone wants to "rule" not be "ruled" this is why even subclans have beef. We have the same "xeer", we have the same blood for the most part etc etc and in the west we all see each other as the same.

Just look at the Germanic kingdoms or Japanese clans. They followed a similar level of development. You need an outside force to "unite" against. Why do you think "Somalinimo" was at an all time high during the 70's to mid 80's? Our "cadow" was Ethiopia and we as Somalis were working to build something together, a nation state we all could be proud of.. it's why the development from 70's onwards to the mids 80's was so quick, organized and way more effective than other African countries... but as soon people saw others benefiting more and outside forces used it to spread divide and conquer tactics on us, it was game over

Also you are wrong about them not calling themselves Somali, Ibn Battuta and others referred to them as Somalis, even the Abyassians did, so that word did come from somewhere as indicator for what we are.

I agree with you. National ideas did not come until colonialism. The Somalis did not think about union. That is why Somalis hate each other

We didn't hate each other, no one wants to be ruled by one another even within subclans, this why people from the same clan and subclan will fight. This is how a clan society works. You can break the pattern through development which happened during the 70's to mid 80's.

Mutual goals need to established, we are in 2023 not the medieval century, a united Somali nation is extremely powerful as we've seen in the past. How it can be established is the real issue. Another issue is how we can stop ajaanbis from interfering in Somali politics, without outside forces things could be resolved
