i think it depends on clans. Some may have some kind of election, others have hereditary garaads

I will make a separate thread for this taariikh but there is some guidance by a guy who acquired ugaas status within my clan without being from reer ugaas.

Garaadtooyo is inherited, and not selected* in the traditional sense; the same applies to the Boqor, Suldaan, Islam etc.

* There is a bit of selection involved in that if the current Garaad sires 5 sons, then his immediate family will have to select one of the sons as the next Garaad, albeit the incumbent Garaad tends to mentor, coach, and prepare one of the sons as his successor.

You will notice it is based on inheritance from the father to the son, with exceptions, where a brother might assume the Garaadship at the passing of the current Garaad, if a son is not quite ready to step up.

You will also notice Suldaan Maxamuud Cali Shire switched the title from Garaad to Suldaan.

There are others such as Saldanada Garaad Wiilwaal of Somali Galbeed, Boqortooyada Bari etc., but you get the gist of it.
