You shouldn’t play any sports, watch tv, be on social media or do anything entertaining. Chess is a hobby no different than any other. Don’t see why it should be singled out.

according to Sheikh Ibn Baz, it's haraam. I think there are different opinions but the safest thing to my understanding is to avoid it.

Imam shafi'i says it isn't haram, and chess could actually help in other fields since its a high iq game.
