Do you have family members that don't understand English? Hang out with them and you'll be forced to speak af somali in no time.

Also, try not to take the laughs personal. Fob somalis laugh at us because they see us like kids. It is like when a 2 yr old mispronounces a word and everyone around them laughs because it is adorable. I get it is annoying when you are a grown adult but if it helps, their laughing is not meant to humiliate you 🙃

My poor understanding of the Somali language has once again embarrassed me in the worst ways. I and my Hooyo were ringing up items in a Somali own convenience store the shop keep initiated some small talk. He asks the standard question "Is this your son? How old is he? is he going to college?". Then he shifted the conversation to me I struggle to say anything coherent. He realized that I couldn't speak Somali and begin his integration by asking why this was the case. As excuse after excuse poured out, I notice he was smiling even laughing a little. He took pleasure in my lack of dhaqan then I was able to clearly see his sadistic nature. When we were through with this ordeal I was very bitter I complained to my Hooyo about the state of my dhaqan. I coped a little and said he was just rude because he was short. No joke his head was barely taller than the table he deals on. Could any of you tell me a resource to learn Somali online perhaps something of quality if possible?

I'm looking to improve in a way that spares me from confrontation with a teacher of some sort. Something automated would be great.

Please try to stick to the question.

Brother honestly, the only words I knew of Somali was "canjeero" , "cunto," "futo weyne" (that was a specific insult against anyone that got on my nerves at age 6) "soo bax" (I screamed this in my brother's ear every morning before heading to school) also "nacala shaydaanka ku yaaleh" (because everyone had to get agitated at some point in my house) and "" (which I actually didn't know the meaning for until turning 14) Honestly bro, I am telling you, LISTEN TO HOOYO'S PHONE CONVOS. Listen to all the tea that Habaryar Shukri is bussing out from her cursed Whatsapp threads, and I promise you, your Somali will go through the roof compared to now. Just try it, it is tried, tested and affirmed, from someone who listened to Habo Shukri's tea and benefited greatly, from the collapse of the language barrier, and also the gossip I got to know about in the world of Habaryars (honestly, if you ask me, they get really raunchy and saucy with their stuff, some of the rumours, Lord have mercy on our souls)

The best way to learn is by going to Somalia and living there for awhile. I went to SL as a child, not knowing how to string a sentence together in Somali. And now I’m 90% fluent (I don’t sound like a native SLander) and my vocabulary is at 120%.

Obviously, not everyone can move back so instead, immerse yourself in you local Somali community. Only talk to fellow Somalis and family in Somali. Help out at a Somali shop. Watch riwaayado. Listen to Somali music. Watch Somali fob YouTubers. Don’t mind the people who make fun of you, it’s just banter.

When are you gonna stop pretending to be South Sudanese :dead:

No, but seriously, I'm not pretending; I've even invited AbdiFreedom to have his Dinka friend communicate with me in written Dinka and quiz me.

I'm not a sheegato; I'm just an obscenely successful troll... so successful that I scare even me. I'm scared...

Bro honestly, just trying is enough for you to feel proud. like you i was born outside somalia grew up around barely any somalis maybe two or three families, i went to hargeisa in my later years of high school, i naturally interacted with everyone so i would still speak to people, i stuttered alot and alot of the times words came out of my mouth that didn't make sense, no grammar, lacking vocabulary, sometimes the people i spoke to wouldn't even understand me. classmates, waiters at restaurants, strangers on the street, anyone,

I wouldn't shy away from speaking with them. majority of the time they wouldn't comment on how bad i was but its obvious they knew i was not good with the language so they would comply if i asked them to repeat themselves, other times when they decided to make fun of me i would straight up look at them and ask them how many languages they knew, then i would tell them i am fluent in english and arabic and can speak somali enough for them to understand, then i would point at them and tell them you only knew somali so who are you to make fun of me? i would say something similar to that and usually they would shut up, no one had anything to retort after i said that, as its the truth after all.

That is also the reason why i dont feel ashamed as i see some people dont speak af somaali even if they can because they feel ashamed of it being weak so they just stay quiet thus not being able to improve ever. so in school nobody dared criticise me anymore lol. My somali improved but i am still shit lol and cant compare to a somali born, but that doesn't stop me from speaking it as its my mother tongue, and i dont feel embarassed when i make mistakes.

So you spoke English to your family? What about elderly relatives who don’t speak English, what do you speak to them?
My parents never really used to speak somali other than basic phrases which I could understand, but usually only spoke english to me. for my relatives most live in Somalia and can’t get in contact with us. even if they did contact i honestly couldnt even form sentences. It’s such a shameful feeling wallahi

Honestly it's not something worth being sad or ashamed over. I'd laugh it off.
What about, how many of the Quran have you/me/we/he, has memorized?
Will speaking Somali save anyone from the punishment of the grave or the next life? Look at the bigger picture my people.

Don’t blame your parents blame yourself. If you wanted to you could be practicing but you choose not to. :manny:. Harsh truth.

Using what? Would you be willing to give me resources since you think it’s that easy?

"Resources"? Could you not spend some time with your parents and learn the language that way?

I think you should cobble together whatever amount of Somali you have and try to speak to your hooyo exclusively in Somali; and when you don't know the Somali equivalent, ask her for it.
