The Somali “qoraxjoog” or “daljoog” have long been envious of their cousins in the “Galbeed” or “dibada” (western Somalis).

When they go to WhatsApp or IG and see the cars we drive, the homes/apartments we live in, and the universities we attend they are reasonably miffed that they can’t experience this.

But nobody tells them many of us are in thousands of dollars of debt due to said university, that the cars we drive may be on lease or payment plan, that the vast majority of Somali Americans and Somali Brits do NOT own the properties they live in.

So the daljoog youth sometimes tahriib, risking their lives (sometimes losing them) in chase of a complete mirage.

The reality is, we should envy their lifestyles.

In Somali cities, most people own the home they live in. I could confidently say in cities like Mogadishu or Kismaayo the home owners outnumber the home renters 3:1.

They enjoy great weather, the benefits of living in an Islamic country, and genuine knowledge of their culture and history.

On the other hand, the westerners who return to Somalia with their wealth end up joining the middle class or upper middle class of Somalia at best. The wealthiest Somalis are those that never left the country. The westerner’s children know little and less of Somali dhaqan.

Anyways, I hope this fosters some meaningful discourse amongst ourselves.

I had a neighbour in Somalia that randomly hated my guts solely because i was from the West. Funnily enough i heard the nigga tahriibed and now lives in Italy. There were other kids that were jealous but they'd just make jokes about it. They make up nicknames for us like 'dayuusbaro' and think we are all baac that don't understand the tough times of life. Mind you if all of these kids were given the chance, they would run to the west in a heartbeat. Its all a cope because they are envy of the better life conditions we are in as well as endless opportunities.

If we are being realistic we have better lives than them due to opportunity. As a young man attending university, i know once i graduate, i should be able to get a good job and go up from there. Guys back home are not so lucky. There are simply not enough jobs and vast majority of Graduates in places like Mogadishu are unemployed or bajaaj drivers. One bajaaj driver told me he had a masters in economics. Only people who find jobs in Somalia are connected through family or fellow tribemen hire them. All my cousins who have jobs were taken there by our xildhibaan/nabadoons

man maybe your family is rich back home but most of my relatives broke. They just barely above water and constantly asking for money when sickness or drought occurs. They own houses but barely have electricity and weather gets hot as hell. Their is no upward mobility or dreams for them just survival.

In America we have rights good hospitals good schools and safety, if you work hard sky is limit. Become doctor or great coder you will be making 300k plush. It’s not fair to compare our lives to most Somalis it’s like Trump saying he knows what’s it’s like to be middle class 😆

This is why I advocate for children to be raised back home at least until the 1st grade or Kindergarten. Let them live in the countryside or in your hometown when they go back to UK, Europe or North America they will have a foundation that is unshakable.
( As a 2000s kid i went back in 2009-2012 so i speak from personal experience.)

It’s a must wallahi. Knowing their language and culture empowers young kids so much.

The reason most diaspora Somali's never exceed the upper-middle class of Somalia while they are abroad is because a load of them do jack shit and claim welfare. Diaspora Somali's should be having a much greater output with the tools they have at their disposal but sadly that isn't the case

It's true. It's true amongst all East African migrants post-2010 (including Eritreans). The Somali's my parents lived around back in the day weren't bums and actually did things with their lives. Now recently arriving Eris and Somali's in the west do nish. Let's not tiptoe around it.

As a somali and someone who grew up in a wealthy neighbourhood and had 2 working parents, i couldn't agree with you more. I thought my life was common, until I met other somalis are realised how fucked up our community truly is.

No he's right, there absolutely no reason for a grown adult 18+ year somali male to die in gang wars (postcode wars for the UK niggas) while their mom is getting welfare money from the government a.k.a tax payers pockets, and struggling to support her 5+ children. I understand that growing up in ghetto can be hard but for fucks sakes you're in a 1st world country, you got all the opportunities in the word.

Somalis back home are tough, got personality, deen and peace in their soul.(after all they live in their own country). Somalis in the west might have better opportunities however they are second class citizens they dont know the feeling off a true home n many off them lack self esteem.
