An analysis of the former Al Shabaab leader

Interesting article analyzing Kebabs new biography of their founder, Godane, (may allah curse him).

“From what I have seen, Shabaab is the AQ branch with which IS supporters have the most (relative) affinity, in no small part due to Shabaab’s unmitigated brutality (such as killing an enormous ~500 civilians in a single strike).1This is rooted in their brand of Salafi Jihadism, which is very close, if not identical, to IS’s ideology. Indeed, many (such as this writer) have wondered why Shabaab remains so fanatically devoted to AQ when it has far more in common with IS. I have found no compelling answer, but all agree that the man most responsible for Shabaab’s adoption of this ideology–and thus their present character as the most extreme AQ branch–is Ahmed Abdi Godane, the organization’s second leader after Aden Hashi Farah Ayro, the founder.”

very good analysis except the author seems to gas up the ICU and Ayro who weren’t saints.

He forgets Isis makes Takfir of AS. And Dacish itself split off over who to make Takfir on and they executed their own wadaads in cold blood.

Also, Hassan Dahir ain’t into elections and democracy.

Its not real ISIS but a black Somalian version
It’s actually one of the more important branches due it being used as a financing centre.

AS doesn’t make Takfir of Hamas, Taliban or Jolani or the Jolani group. Dacish made Takfir of all of those groups as well their own scholars who rejected some elements of their Takfir.

The guy who wrote this doesn’t have a clue. If IS were to gain a stronghold in Somalia, AS would be the first group they would slaughter, as they view them as imposters.

Sure, they share many things, but to say they’re almost identical is a big stretch. I mean, IS views AQ as gaalo, and they’re founding fathers of AS.

isis had two major strains:
the binali strain - named after their religious leader turki binali
the hazimi strain - named after a saudi sheikh who is in saudi. they take inspiration from him

the binalis are more radical than zawahiri and co. and the hazimis were too radical for the binalis.

Al Shabab are more radical than ISIS, because they indiscriminately bomb cities in Somalia killing thousands of innocent Muslim civilians. Why on earth does it matter what they publicize regarding the Taliban, whom are 10000 kilometers away? They mass takfir Somalis. Only Boko Haram are worse than them.

Al Qaeda in Yemen are the opposite, they're building relations with Iran and have halted hostilities with Houthis. In the distant future, I wouldn't be suprised if Al Shabab makes takfir of Al Qaeda and leaves them. If Shabab doesn't view Jolani as a murtad, then they're practicing taqqiyah.

Also its typical for jihadist groups to fight against each other and have power struggles.

It matters because we are discussing it from an academic perspective, not an emotional one. And AS don’t mass Takfir those living under them or even most Somalis who are not working for regional administration or with AU/Ethiopian troops. We have to be honest if we are engaging in an academic debate or to even dislodge them from Somali clans in the South.

The Binali and Hazimi groups of IS are more radical from a Takfir perspective( as Reer pointed out) because there is more scope for mass Takfir of societies and groups which would breed more chaos in their ideology

AS maybe more radical in their suicide bombings, but we really don’t know as Dacish hasn’t had a chance to expand and control big territories in Somalia.

My point was never to say one group is better than the other. I was correcting what the white dude wrote when he said “ they are almost identical ideologically”.

You’re just going off on tangents as usual.

The reason why they conduct suicide bombings in Xamar killing 500+ is because they consider it Darul Harb and the inhabitants are legitimate targets if they don't leave it. This is ideological, because they're drawing inspiration from the campaigns of the early Wahhabis who conducted similar actions throughout the Arabian Peninsula and against the Ottoman-held territories.

They do make mass takfir of Somalis, not every single Somali but the vast majority like how MIAW made mass takfir against the people of Sham.
Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab also says:

لكن هو أتى من الشام، وهم يعبدون ابن عربي، جاعلين على قبره صنما يعبدونه، ولست أعني أهل الشام كلهم، حاشا وكلا; بل لا تزال طائفة على الحق، وإن قلّت، واغتربت

“But he came from al-Sham, and they worship Ibn ‘Arabi and have made an idol upon his grave to worship it. I do not mean all of the people of al-Sham, no of course not; rather there does not cease a group from them to be upon the truth, even if they’re only few.”

And this is how Wahhabis attacked the people of al-Sham:
Source: 'Unwan al-Majd 1/309-310

The news reached him that the Bedouins of the Levant and its Arab tribes, including the ‘Anazah, Bani Sakhr, and others, were in the region. When he arrived there, he found none of them, as a warning had preceded him, prompting them to gather under Dawkhi ibn Samir, the leader of the Wuld ‘Ali clan of ‘Anazah. They had positioned themselves beyond the mountain known as Tawil al-Thalj (Long Snow) near Nablus, encamped at the Spring of Qahwa in the mountains of Hauran. When Ibn Samir and his companions learned of Saud’s approach, they fled with their Bedouin allies to the Ghur (lowlands) of Hauran. Saud then advanced through the area, patrolling it extensively. He passed by the villages around Muzayrib and Bosra, where his forces looted all the goods and food they found and set fire to the settlements. The inhabitants had already fled upon hearing of his approach.

Saud then camped at the Spring of al-Bajjah, where his Muslim forces and their armies watered their horses and drank. Eventually, he returned to his homeland with abundant spoils: horses, goods, furnishings, and food. The people of Levant were massacred, and the region—Damascus, its towns, and all its Bedouin territories—was struck with terror and immense dread because of this raid.

They draw ideologically inspiration to the Wahhabis sacking in Ta'if, leading to the indiscriminate killing of civilians, including scholars, women, and children. Homes and markets were looted, destroying the local economy.

After Ta'if, the Wahhabis besieged and occupied Mecca. Firstly, they cut off supply routes from Egypt and Syria because they are Darul Harb (like how Al Shabab views Somali cities) and this led to mass starvation as carvans delivering grain etc were essential to Mecca residents. Over half of Mecca's population reduced. Same happened with Madinah, Jeddah etc.

Neither ISIS or Al Qaeda would be radical enough to do this to Sunni Muslims, but Al Shabab are. If you are not educated on Salafi Jihadi ideology then don't accuse others of being emotional.

If you're going criticise MIAW, please don't regurgitate arguments from a fat crypto-majoosi.
