Amhara woman running for a seat in jigjiga

In theory Ethiopia's constitution allows every region including DDS to secede. But in practice it won't be allowed by any Ethiopian central government including ironically the old Meles regime even though his TPLF created this constitution that allows secession
What would happen if all the states that want to secede declared secession. Surely the govt wouldn’t be able to attack them all since it would ruin its reputation on the international stage plus soldiers not fighting against their home regions

You have to understand that Ethiopia is the darling of both the west and Russia, as Somalis found out in 1978. I predict Abiy will change the constitution to ban secession and the world will not care. Like Meles before him Abiy controls every region, Ethiopia is always a one party state so no way any regional government would dare call for breaking away from Ethiopia

What is all this fuss about this? I don't get it. You guys come to the US as refugees, foreigner wearing hijab and run for a senate seat but an Ethiopian who lives in one of the cities in Ethiopia can't run for office? How stupid is that?

The Ethiopian constitution allows anybody to run for office anywhere as long as he/she is a permanent residence in that location for at least 2 years and that he/she speaks the local official language. In the case of Jigjiga, any Ethiopian who lived there for 2 years and speaks Af-Somali, the official language of the state, can run for office. There is no other precondition, not ethnicity nor wearing hijab as some of you are requiring. Wearing hijab? WTF? Ethiopia is a secular state and whether you wear hijab or not is up to you. We have ministers who wear hijab and we have those who don't. And yes, any Somali can do the same thing in Amhara's capital, Bahirdar. That is the law of the land.

If the jigjigans don't like the candidates, they have every right not to vote for them. That is up to the voters. Democracy 101 which most of you here enjoy.

The votes are rigged and we all know who will win. In Ethiopia the constitution is bs we both know Somalis can’t run for a seat in the Amhara region in reality and also we know that people can’t secede if they want which is also in the constitution. No one talked about hijab so stop the bs. :camby:You can speak about laws all you want but we know the reality on the ground.

You have been making deals behind our backs and even designated ONLF as terrorist organisation on Somalia while in Ethiopia its not.

Farmajo even asked Abye to use ENDF to oust Madhoobe in Kismaayo.

After knowing your nature we wouldnt waste time losing two lands.
I prefer to lose Dds over Juboyinka.

Fighting for dds would mean hyenas would feast on us like qalbi dagax.
Horta dont equate madoobe and onlf thats such a nonsense thing to say. Madoobe is a kenyan stooge who is a 5th column that is guarded in kismayo by kenya. Its only right to use ethiopia against kenya. While ONLF are a freedom seeking jabhad fighting for their land that is occupied.

You will lose jubboyinka to who? Arent you the majority?

All BS. This is the first open and free election in which even the former "terrorist" organization like ONLF are participating. Instead of testing the system and improving if there is weakness in it, you are already giving verdict. That is lazy and won't help anything. Run for office, this is the first independent election board. Test it and come back. We have had no free election and no independent election board until PM Abiy came to power. Now it is new but check it first before talking it bad.

I can't hold your hand and force you to run for office in Amhara or Oromia region. In both states many different ethnicities live and run for office but if you prefer to just seat idle and don't use the system that is not my problem. There is no special law that only apply for Somalis.

Onlf have never been terrorists so stfu. Also when political opponents are in prison and we can see onlf candidates being harassed do you expect us to believe the elections are impartial?

Whether you want it or not is not the point. This is the law of the land and if you don't like it change it if you get majority vote or use article 39 and exit. But as long as you are in Ethiopia, this is it.

We all know what will happen if we try to secede it will be Tigray 2.0 so stop the bs. Ethiopia is not democratic and we know this. You can calcal all you want but facts are facts.

We have just started reforms and of course in some localities local officials will feel threatened by the new contenders. What do you expect this is africa man. It takes time. But even if it is not perfect yet you must admit political parties never had so much freedom and also fielded more candidates like this before. Democracy is a process and not a one time stand :ftw9nwa: Nothing comes perfect from heaven, you have to engage and work to improve the system.

As I said this is the first independent election board and this is the first really free and fair election with election observers from EU and US will attend. If you don't like the non Somali candidates in Jigjiga just don't vote for them. Go vote and test the system. Be on the spot when vote counting is done. Make the counted votes of your county public online and check it with the official announcement. This is what we Addis Ababans for example are planning to do. We will make every counted vote automatically public as soon as it is counted and check what the official data later says. People can make it impossible to rig votes. Crying and whyning without using the system to the full is just lazy.

We both know that article 39 is fake, like they would let us go without a fight. Last time we tried you xabashis attacked us at ramadan. :drakewtf:

I agree on article 39. That is not realistic (at least for now) and will ultimately end up in war. But engaging with in the political system even if you want secession is the best way forward in my view.
