Interesting account of one mans 7 year journey with al shabab.

Talks about his motivations for initially joining, his realisations they really weren’t about the religion, talked about their tactical strategies, how they move around different areas to avoid detection, talks about al shabaab fiercest opponents, close calls, Ajnabis doing training for bomb making, talked about a method the group uses to allegedly detect drones in the area, how they are terrified of drones, even senior leaders never meet each other for fear of drones, talked about his long strategy of escaping, talks about disputes between al shabab, how they motivate suicide bombers to blow themselves up, how they manage to stop them from backing out last min (such as using undetacheable suicide vests) etc

I don’t think there’s any new info but was just very interesting.

What struck me is how little they get paid ($40 per month), goes to show how much poverty plays into that hands of al shabab. Wish there was a feasible way of buying out these foot soldiers, seems like most really aren’t as ideologically driven as we’re told to believe.

And how they rotate fighters to different regions every year to prevent them from establishing deep ties with the villagers and people in general apparently the more they're familiar with the people the more hesitant they're to carry out orders.


They also give their fighters a break every 9 months and send spies to watch one another. He said levels of trust is at all times low because of the drones they don't trust anyone with location of Amiirs or even commanders. The elite Al Shabaab members don't even use phones for fear it could tracked by Americans. They also get most of the booty and lot leaving bread crumbs for low level fighters. They engage in collective punishment if a tribe is fighting or don't want to pay Zakat they'll go around and fight them as a whole tribal militia or ordinary citizens they don't care they'll kill them kill their civilians and rob their businessmen
