This is old. Al Shabaab no longer have any checkpoints in Middle Shabelle.
Their main taxation point in South central Somalia (Masaajid Cali gaduud) was liberated November 2022. That town was where they taxed those travelling from Xamar to the north and vice versa. Made them hundreds of thousands of $ per months. Big hit to their revenue.
This map shows the Raage ceele and Ceelbaraf checkpoints in Middle Shabelle which, again, was towns liberated in October 2022. Currently under pro goverment forces and locals.

Jubbaland is AS stronghold that's why. Especially middle jubba region. There is no region in Somalia that is controlled in its entirety apart from Middle Jubba.The second stronghold of AS is koonfur galbeed.

Jilib serves as the capital of Shabaab, You can see a concentration of checkpoints in the area. It's widely acknowledged that Madoobe and Al-Shabaab maintain a working relationship around the charcoal trade, thats why although they are primarily in Middle Jubba where they're at their strongest, target GM, KG and HS for offenses.
