I suspect this is not a recent phenomenon but rather been an issue in humankind since the beginning, our ancestors would take upon women from other villages as a form of an accomplishment, I’m not even talking about a long time but rather even a few thousands of years ago. This would be seen as a victor to the man who took on that woman as their village would be seen as being far more dominant than the other submissive one. Perhaps this plays a role into this as due to the modernization we see this on a much larger scale and with a larger lens ie the internet.
