Why does Iran always back losers? Russians seem a lot more pragmatic and have decided to become friendly with Damascus

The problem with the Alawite is that even the coast has a large Sunni population. The coastal cities were historically majority Sunni while the Alawites were in the rural mountains. Any idea of secession won’t work as the Sunnis in that region won’t tag along. They brought this on themselves; they were used by European powers decades before the advent of the Assad dynasty; and were privileged under the Assad regime
Do they seriously think that Russia is any position to conduct operations in any part of Syria at this point?
It's funny that the Alawites never considered the possibility that Assad would fall.
The Alawites should have have had contingencies in place for precisely this scenario; they should have formed a strong militia in their region; they should have placed military industrial plants in their mountains; they should have fortified their mountainous region with trenches and artificially created entry chokepoints during the decades their sons were in charge
Too late now, so why cry?
The world is watching Syria, so don't think that the new Government in Syria is going to engage in any sort of ethnic-cleansing, however, there will be instances of (understandable) abuse that the Alawites will be subject to.

Also their pro-regime Alawite cells attacked in Homs which is a majority Sunni city. The Syrian Sunni population which already distrusted the Alawites will soon absolutely resent them. The Druze should learn from this lesson
The current government is trying to get ahead of this situation, it doesn't want any bloodshed or sectarian violence. The Iranian and Russian media started to talk about syria after weeks of silence, the marks are becoming clear, especially that Israel is occupying southern Syria on the pretext of protecting minorities.
That’s the problem with a batiniya religion. There’s no such thing as an alawite below 25 because they are basically normal sunnis or 12ers till then, and then their “sheiks” tell them that the stars are angels or whatever and that Ali (ra) is the reincarnation of Jesus (AS).the assads made the alawites urban dwellers. they got exposed to sunnis. so now there are alawites who are alawites by ethnicity but they prayer 5 times a day like sunnis. some of them pray like shias. they got exposed to religiosity when the assad family put them in cities.
