Al-Shabab reveal video of raid against military base (VIDEO)

Shabaab, al Qaeda’s branch in Somalia, recently detailed a deadly raid on a Somali military base near the southern port town of Kismayo that took place two months ago.

The assault, which took place on Sept. 2, left over 20 Somali military personnel dead, far more than Somali officials admitted to after the attack.

Shabaab detailed the attack in a video entitled “And Be Harsh Against Them.” The video, which was released today, includes dramatic footage of the nighttime assault which included a massive suicide car bombing, and Shabaab fighters entering the base, clashing with Somali soldiers, and executing survivors (note: elements of the video appear doctored; such as the muzzle flashes and some sound effects, however the video is authentic).

WTF kind of "military base" is that anyway???? I swear to god I thought it was a refugee camp they attacked. Where the f*ck are the guard towers? And LIGHTS????? Why aren't there any sensors to detect group movement???? They aren't expensive at all, they literally cost few hundred and can even get the for under $100. Somali military operation strategy is bloody disgraceful. What triggers me most is that they don't learn from their mistakes.....for 10 freaking years they don't make any adjustments or revise strategy. smh

Ok i just **Really** finished the video and walahi it was very disturbing. My heart goes out to those poor dead soldiers that were butchered due to the incompetence of their military leaders.

The tactics of Al-Shabab are well known.........ram a suicide vehicle into the gate and blow it up, followed by the on pouring of shabab fighters through entrance. These military bases usually don't have hundreds of fighters and are usually outnumbered, they have no chance once the barriers are breached.

1. HAVE MULTIPLE BARRIERS. How fucking hard is that? Once the first is breached, the military base will have ample time to gather and shore up defences and get to their machine guns positions.

2. HAVE LIGHTS !!!

3. HIGH POSITIONS !!! The barriers should be much higher and there should be high guard towers to shoot from and to most of all detect enemies from afar. Since the military doesn't have aircraft this is super important.

I am not a military general and have zero experience and I know these are primitive suggestions but its still astounding that they haven't figured it out.

The issue of funding always comes up, but there are a myriad of ways to get funding however it requires outside-the-box thinking from the Somali government. First you have to ask why foreign governments don't give the Somali government money, the reason is that there is zero accountability, meaning there is no way for donors to track the money to see where its being spent. The government needs to implement IT infrastructure for a sound financial system that meets modern standards, an idea could be directly depositing money to soldiers mobile accounts or something. This only costs a few million I have no idea why any progress hasn't been made in this area.

Secondly, I have been saying this for years and years. The Somali government MUST nationalise the telecom industry. No government on earth, even in the West, had a privatised telecom industry while the government was poor and/or just created.

1. It's a lucrative sector with a lot of revenue.
2. If the government OWNS it, multinationals would be much more willing to invest in the telecom sector. The owners as of now simple don't have the capital to make improvements.
3. By owning the telecom industry you can have vertical integration with the financial system. You have much better oversight of criminal activity.
4. National security reasons. Simple question to ask the CEO's: Can you prevent terrorist from using your network??? Pass some laws requiring telecoms to do it. They will not be able to. That's enough reason to shut them down and let the government operate.

Two major obstacles to this.
1. Telecom owners are terrorist themselves and gov is afraid of them. This excuse is unacceptable. You cannot claim to be a legitimate government if you don't even have monopoly of violence in your own jurisdiction. LOCK THEM UP.
2. Somali government lacks the expertise to operate it. This is tricky but can be overcome.
