The estimated value of the sugar trade is earmarked between $200-$400 million dollars. Al-shabaab taxes each truck $1086 for safely crossing its checkpoints and into Kenya with far superior taxation systems in place than the Jubaland administration. Each truck is given a stamped receipt which guarantees safe passage through rebel held territory without incurring a single cent till the Kenyan border.
