They gained their independence in 1977 sxb and not 80s, which makes them a 41 year old country, Asmara looks like a developed country compared to Djibouti,Eritrea is only 29 year old yet has per living standards then Djiboutians.

Eritrea is a dictatorship and one of the poorest countries in the world. In many aspects they have the same conditions we have in somalia , don't be fooled by a shiny city. I can show you beautiful pics of Xamar and Hargeysa and yet Somalia/somaliland is still a mess.

Yes, I don't know why but most of them are tigrinya speaking Christians, but there are also some muslims who are running away. I guess that tigrinya Christian's tend to live in urban areas and have more interactions with the government that forces people to do an endless military services. Muslims like Afars tend to live in rural areas and have less interactions with the government. I also think tigrinya people tend to have more money than other groups and can afford the trip to leave the country.

Well tbh most of the Tigrinya here are actually extremely poor and came to the Netherlands through boat. The story I’ve heard from them made me tear up since they didn’t had any choice since the government would torture or kill you if you go against their wishes.

the world is currently focusing on the corona virus, so almost no one has any clue about what’s going on there since they cut off all contact. The government is using their chance since almost no one is focussing on them
