Africas birth rates falling faster then expected according to the economist

Somalis should expand as much as possible. Keep a big birthrate even as a stable nation by paying for free education and childcare so women have more kids. Population is destiny so we need a large nation to hold power
Demographics is destiny will be interesting to see what the future holds for the somali nation in 30-50 years

SSAs population peak has been revised down by the UN to 3.4 billion from over 4 billion back in the 2010s lots of countries are experiencing a demographic transition such as Senegal, kenya, ghana etc

what do you guys think could be causing this new phenomenon in Africa

My guess would be limited resources and poverty, Africans are realizing bringing a child into this world without the necessity to care for you and your spouse isn’t enough. Good for them, the yesteryears of having 20 kids to further put yourself in poverty is over! I support the new wave of life for them.

A high birth rate has not been maintained in Somalia. When people settle in cities, learn and access contraceptives, the fertility rate will decrease, and this is better. Somalia is a country with little rain and water that cannot support the population of Karana

I asked an ai chat about the somali growth rate of somalis in kenya out of curiosity and what it thinks about it. Here is it's answer.

This shows that the Somali population in Kenya grew rapidly from 1979 to 1999, but slowed down or stagnated from 1999 to 2019.

Based on the results of my search, I would suspect that the Kenyan government may have some role in manipulating the census data, as they have a history of marginalizing and discriminating against Somalis in Kenya. For instance, in 1963, the Kenyan government ignored the wishes of the majority of Somalis in the Northern Frontier District to join Somalia and instead annexed the territory to Kenya. In 1967-1968, the Kenyan government fought a war against Somali rebels who wanted to secede from Kenya and join Somalia. In 1984-1985, the Kenyan government launched a brutal counter-insurgency campaign against Somalis in the North Eastern Province, known as the Wagalla massacre. In 2014-2016, the Kenyan government conducted a controversial security operation against Somalis in Nairobi and other urban areas, known as Operation Usalama Watch. These examples show that the Kenyan government has a vested interest in controlling and suppressing Somalis in Kenya.

Therefore, one possible motive for manipulating the census data is to reduce or inflate the number of Somalis in Kenya for political or economic reasons. For example, by reducing the number of Somalis in Kenya, the Kenyan government may seek to justify their exclusion or discrimination from political representation or resource allocation. By inflating the number of Somalis in Kenya, the Kenyan government may seek to attract more aid or support from international donors or partners. However, these are only speculations and not conclusive evidence. I would need to conduct a more thorough and rigorous investigation to verify or falsify these claims.

The fertility rate of Addis is somewhat a red herring. It's the only place in East Africa that actually has high development (HDI of 0.741). Since the COL is much higher, you will see some selection bias whereby white collar workers and PMC types are going to artificially deflate the fertility rate. You can look at the ethnically federated regions for the true fertility rates of the different ethnic groups.

"Demography is destiny" is somewhat misleading. Human capital is destiny. While pumping out legions of children is indeed one way of increasing a nation's human capital, it is probably the least efficient method for underdeveloped nations to use. In Somalia's case where resources and infrastructure are under extreme stress this would even be deleterious since many individuals would be a net negative to the sum of human capital.

What works best for a nation like Somalia is the enrichment of pre-existing human capital. This can be done through various means. Simple things such as preventing famine would do leaps and bounds.

I know I toot my own horn a lot but lets use the examples of Eritrea and Ethiopia. During the mid to late 20th Century, Ethiopia had an extremely high fertility rate. Since the feudal administration of Selassie took no measures to enrich their human capital, those in the less arable regions were a HUGE net negative. So much that we ended up with Bob Geldof's "Do They Know It's Christmas?". Meanwhile, the EPLF in the north took the approach of enriching their populace. While military operations took place, all those under EPLF jurisdiction were made literate and healthcare was provided. Irrigation projects were undertaken so that once arid land was made arable to safeguard the populace from famine. No wonder the Derg got karbaashed
