Full metal jacket was a 80s movie fun fact the reason why thailand has a large “tourism ”industry is because they hosted American bases during the Vietnam war and the soldiers started hanging around the local women
I know it was dropped in '87. What I said was people born in the 90s were the last mainstream watchers of those types of films (even saying "mainstream" is perhaps a slight exaggeration). The new generations are typically not consumers of such movies. What we consider the 70s, is what they consider the 80s. Heck, I watch some old Japanese cinema or one of my favorite works by Coppola that is before the 80s (the 80s were somewhat wack when I think about it).
Full Metal Jacket was the most unrefined movie of Stanley Kubrick who usually is very precise and qualitatively neat with his work. Which certainly was a purposeful directive, given that war is all over the place. Still, the lack of good form makes me think of it as overrated. The whole thing felt like a drag to watch. And I have seen it twice.
