It could cause a chain reaction. Russia attacks Ukraine and China attacks Taiwan. It would be strategic for both as the US cannot support both fronts but have committed to both sides to ensure their sovereignty. It's a very complicated diplomatic situation.

Another element to consider is that resources the US has spread to other military operations could potentially be pulled for this as they would require their resources. This will only hinder any headway made from said ventures. As such, it would be in the US's interest to go about this diplomatically.

If China's behavior with Hong Kong is any indication, it ain't looking so good for the world soon.
