A two party system can’t work in Somalia here’s why

I’ve seen the idea floating around about a north south two party system for a while now that can’t work The main reason being tribalism unless the presidency is rotated through the 2 parties term by term amongst Somalias major clans I don’t possibly see how this can work without backlash by the clans who have become sidelined through this potential new system it could have a variety of consequences

Somalia hasn’t reached the political maturity of some other nations where ideology comes first I don’t agree with the current duopoly either so why should we create another one what do you guys think

We should have unlimited parties. I will like to open my own party called the southern Somalia party.
We don’t need 100 different parties either just a balance where the person with the best ideas to rebuild the nation wins a 2 party system will create a political headache all groups should have an equal shot at the presidency

Let Darood and hawiye share it, five years for Darood and another for hawiye
No one controls Somalia except these two tribes

I'd rather see 80 small political parties in somalia instead of us having two party system which will in the end be hawiye and darood controlling one of the each. We might spiral into a civil war again because of a two party system it's too risky

HSM was confronted (quite literally, lol) with questions of why he selected the two-party system (and the presidential/vp system) from the Q&A sessions of yesterday. It seems like he plans to move forward with that agenda.

What his response to that question? I watched a little bit of the video and planned on saving it for later

RX and daarood and minority clans will join to create the heaviest mucaraad ever seen in Somali politics if that plan goes through it won’t be pretty

It was asked towards the end, I think by a (former) politician iirc.

But he said something along the lines of that it didn’t come from him alone but through the consultation talks with other regional leaders, referring to the NCC agreements.

As they should. Even looking beyond clan lines, two party isn’t enough political variety, in terms of diverse ideologies, to represent the public. It will lead fewer people participating in the electoral system.

Clan is inescapable in Somali politics 😂 even Somalis in Kenya register and vote on clan lines

Exactly I wonder how this will be presented to the general public when the time comes for a 1m1v

Yeah, that’s pretty much the same all over Somaliweyn. But the million dollar question would be how the two parties will be selected.

Are there going to be picked out by the current political elites? Or will there be a selection process involving the public with a primary election and then the main election?

Imo, if they really have to restrict a number of parties, it shouldn’t be no less than five.

Yea I remember when the NCC first announced the two party system I read an article that said many notable people like Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke, Sharif Sheikh, Hassan Khaire, and Abdiweli Gaas were against it

I haven't kept up with it all sense then. Are there any notable people who are still publicly opposed to this system?

Some of those mucaarad and other politicians meet with HSM to discuss those issues.

Implementing the two party system will only create a monopoly on power, for the biggest clans. The Australian model would be a great reference, they have approx 4 to 5 political parties there if I’m not mistaken. This would be a good model in Somalia, and if a candidate didn’t want to join they could always run as an independent. Like others have mentioned, once the democratic vote comes to be, people will most likely vote due to clan lines. Whether your for federalism or centralism, this will always be an issue I suppose.
