I have no problem if a somali born and raised in Egypt or UAE says he is Arab in the same way i have no problem if western diaspora somalis day they are British, Swedish or American. My problem is when they say all somalis are Arabs. That's just not true

Aside from anything else, if we look at somalis only phenotypically they arent any closer to peoples like bantu then they do with araps, so we dont look like any of them but for the sake of political gains we better lean towards arabism than africanism

I went to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and spoke with a lot of Syrians. They all asked me the same question. Essentially, they're actually taught in school that Somalia is an Arab country because it's in the Arab League.
Also the response of black is confusing to some of them, because they're not a race, but a tribal identity. Afro-Arabs exist.
But I explained that we have our own culture, language and the only definition that works is that we're in the Arab League which is kinda weak. Some of them disagreed with me, but they understood my perspective. We're not Arab.

they claim when it suits them but disassociate when they’re not interested.
Somalis are Arab-adjacent. We have a lot of arab loanwords, cultural similarities, have had a lot of historical interaction through trade, migration and tribal/diplomatic relations, and share world outlook due to arab influence in media, religion, etc. You may not want to be called an Arab but th two people are very, very close.
I'd like to preface though that in racial terms we are more Sub saharan african, black or whatever you want to call it. But arab is a cultural term not a racial one so it doesnt matter.

They are doctrined in school that Somalia is an Arab country and the rest of Arab countries are one single entity called the “Arab world”
