A major reason Somalia won't become a functioning state for the foreseeable future.

After the 1991 civil war , most of the teachers and intelligent class fled Somalia to live overseas. A prime example is actually the current president who applied for asylum in the US while studying in the US. For most of the 90's and 00's Somalia didn't have a rigirous functioning education system that was on par with even the poorest of nation.

Even today if we look at UNICEF's website we get some jarring statistics. More than 3 million children in Somalia are out of school, schools are extremely overcrowded leading to extremely poor results in all sectors.

This is also evident in Somaliland with over 50% of the students being out of school , meaning 50% of the future somalilanders will simply a burden in today's modern high tech society.

Some statistics we can see in the 2016 report (reliefweb):

* Somalia has one of the world’s lowest gross enrolment rates for primary school‐aged children with only 30 percent children at primary education level and 26 percent for secondary education
* In October alone 90,000 people were displaced due to armed conflict in Gaalkacyo (2016) meaning no school for a significant amount of children.

What this implies is that Somalia will continue being a backwater joke of a society for at least the next century.

Somalilanders are a lot more patriotic and visionary. Abarso has been sending kids to top uni’s (MIT/Oxford/Yale etc) for nearly the past decade. In another decade, those kids will be the ones taking up government positions, and academics with experience will run Somaliland .

Do remember in 1991 all the schools were pretty much destroyed. The situation is improving on a yearly basis given the government is finally functioning with a steady income from internal revenues and donors.

Most countries suffer from brain drain which is a term used to describe substantial emigration or migration of individuals. So long as there's peace. Somalia will in fact go through brain gain! With the amount of diaspora coming back with their knowledge/capital.

The only thing that can save somalia is the return of the diaspora

The return of the generation who fled somalia will be coming back in the 2020s and 30s and they will take somalia and each of their respective states into a prosperous land Inshallah

We will see, i dont think they would bother coming back to Somaliland when they have the opportunity to work in America.

I wish we could get a diaspora(educated) only region in Somalia. We are already nearly 250k and growing in the west, we could form a utopia in a small region in Somalia.
No we need to spread all over the country and occupy key positions, then teach others.
Somalia will improve once we have our first foreign born or foreign raised diaspora president.
Actually the best would a president born in somalia but raised in the west. He or she will have enough knowledge of somali culture but will also be less qabilist than Somalis raised back home.

We just need a few people coming back, many somalis are going back home even right now despite the instability. Once the country gets a little bit better many others will return

Allow the cuqdad bro. Why wouldn’t they come back to their home? They are more closer to the homeland than me or you. It’s where their born and raised. We already seeing the fruits of its labour of abaarso with some of the Ivy League graduates bringing back their knowledge

PL was the first place in Africa to get a Microsoft + Cambridge University deal at the start of the pandemic because of how structured the education system is.
