A lot of Somalis are getting into the tech industry

Anybody else notice this seems like a lot of Somalis are getting into this field after university nowadays or transitioning from other fields into tech

we even have our own community Somalisintech on twitter and instagram with thousands of people connected

what do you guys think about this seems like a good development for our community

Rarely meet anyone really in “tech”. It’s usually filled with people who are interested in IT or recruiters or even someone selling something.

Get a Degree, for the people who genuinely are serious working in IT. Currently working on my masters in Computer science then will obtain my PHD

100% this. Most of the Somali majors I know in CS are completely bullshitting it, none of them know how to properly code
I barely meet anyone who acutely graduated. Most drop out as soon as they take database classes, or even worse they cant through calc or discrete maths. The ones who do leave to work in other areas like management. Im yet to meet any somali working in actual tech with a 4 year stem degree.

Yeah I'm a sophomore in uni and so much more ahead of the curve simply because I finished calculus series and data structures. I honestly feel bad for them wallahi considering I myself don't even know much :heh:

you don’t need to code you can easily work in tech working as a analysts project manager, customer support/success accounting or account executive. many positions and roles to chose from in the field and make competitive wages

Tech was the shiny field in 2010-2020, where you could land on any job by just knowing one or two languages, no prior work experience, now it is crowded af and needs new more complicated skills to get a job. Imagine they ask 3 years of working experience for entry levels?

Why anyone who works in tech needs calc or dicrete math?

I can offer some tips. I received 5 job offer before I graduated.

Yes it's good however I want to see people learn other skills like plumbing, electrican, optician etc. We need a diverse skill range.
