A few questions about the Somali civil war from a Sudani person

This isnt a bait or troll job. I'm a Sudani person and of course my interest in lies within East African politics. A united Somalia is important for the East African region.

So just a few questions. To learn more about the civil war and what are the solutions

Why did the war break out?
Where there peace treaties?
What were the goals of the different factions

All those questions have very difficult answers that people could argue for eternity.

We had a dictator many crimes took place and many people tried to revolt oddly enough the “revolts” predate the crimes by the dictator he believed a collective punishment was the right idea to teach everyone a lesson and he was proven to be horribly wrong with that choice.

Their were many peace talks but they almost always were failures.

Most of the factions at the end of the day wanted to establish more power for their clan. Later on however religous factions wiped out clan factions and became the new beast of somalia.

The civil war today is mostly to do with these religious fanatics, clan does however become important in politics between states and their dynamic with their own districts and neighboring states aswell as the federal government.

One of the leaders and architects of the first rebel movement, may Allah forgive his sins, said if he knew the outcome, he would have never fought the government.

Everyone thought they were doing the right thing and in their mind I’m sure they justified it. The government thought they were protecting the country and did not see the abuse of power and and the unchecked corruption within that caused public anger.

The rebels thought they were bringing down an oppressive regime but they did not see their lack of foresight and directly playing in to the hands of foreign powers who wanted nothing less than the destruction of the nation. The 5 or so factions were all united in overthrowing said Barre, but beyond that they couldn’t agree on the time of day.

All in all, it was an unfortunate era that we as Somalis must learn from. We have to never pick a side or else we are just repeating a failed era and biased views. I am sure, we have moved on and better things are to come soon :)

Outside interests wanted to destroy Somalia as they saw a country with serious potential. The rebel groups were formed from the outside in and they convinced them to overthrow a brutal dictator. But little did they know this was a fatal mistake and insured the destruction of Somalia.

Our leaders realised this after barre fled Mogadishu. They were hoodwinked into self destruction.

The dictatorship got overthrown by rebel groups in 1991 and that led to fighting over land between various somali clans. And then islamic courts and foreign soldiers come into the picture and it becomes a complete shitshow.

There were peace treaties between clans over what land they rule but other than that im not sure

Clan factions didn't really have a goal other than to secure their land from other people or conquer new land but al shabaabs goal was to conquer all of Somalia and instill strict sharia law across the country
