With a good mind for figures, they could afford it, say if he were bringing in 5g a month, methinks. Let us do the numbers: based on your numbers, their total cash outflow is 5,100$, a 100$ more than his cash inflow, and with a slight adjustment of their lifestyle, it is doable. Cut back on frivolous spending viz. coffee, dining out, entertainment etc.
