It reflects an increasing tendency. Whatever the problems are impacting AA's, joining in a white nationalist-led anti-immigrant thing isn't going to do anything for them. Of all the steps they could do to try to move forward- this is it? Being soldiers in a fight that is about preserving white demographics? I was reading about the US civil war recently and I was baffled to read about some free blacks in the South who voluntarily helped out the Confederate war effort. I assume this was a strange minority and besides that- their cause was defeated.
edit: this is not an anti-AA thing and I'm sure it isn't representative of AAs overall at the time but I just want to share this excerpt bcuz this is such a weird event that happened (and btw this is only a part of the section about free black pro-Confederates)- "A group of light-skinned colored residents of Charleston assured city officials that “our attachments are with you, our hopes and safety and protection from you,… our allegiance is due to South Carolina and in her defense, we will offer up our lives, and all that is dear to us.” The Charleston Mercury announced in January 1861 that 150 of that city’s free black residents had volunteered to help build redoubts along the coast. Other free black men served Confederate military units as musicians, cooks, and in other support roles."
