The typical local in Somalia is probably the laziest and most unproductive person on the planet. They are too prideful to wash their own plate. It's a bad business decision investing anything there even if there was no threat of terrorism or a clan battle popping off. The only foreign investment is towards ports and energy. You have to ask yourself why the multimillionaires in Uganda, Kenya, and UAE and etc like Amina Moghe, who owns the biggest factories and malls in Uganda, have not invested anything in Somalia, an untapped market? Somalia is special. Workers will demand khat and payment upfront before starting work (which they won't even do). I have seen this with my own eyes. There are no guaranteed property rights; I have also seen this play out between a former and current commercial property owner for over a decade and it's still ongoing. Somalia is a nightmare. It is a very low trust society. The culture is shitty. Nothing will advance without addressing this very shitty culture. If you point out the problem, they'll call you anti-Somali and come at you like a pack of wild hyenas. They think corruption for example will just magically decrease on its own someday without addressing the problem. One time in Somalia, an airport worker didn't make me go through the metal detectors at the airport because I was distantly related to her. This distant relation was more important to her than the possibility of me having a bomb. Unless this culture of corruption, deception, clannism, incompetence, laziness, narcissism, lack of empathy and many others are addressed, nothing changes. Somalia is a circus and its people are clowns. You lose faith in humanity when you visit Somalia and I lost it three times.
You clock on Somalis are a magical people when you see Djibouti. They have a direct rail line to one of the biggest population centres in Africa, a modern port, plenty of revenue coming in from expats and foreign soldiers and it looks like a giant IDP camp

Likely correct. Half of the population is 15 or younger and they have no future to look forward to. Somalia will unfortunately always be a basket case. Only a small part of the diaspora is doing well and almost none of them will go back to rebuild. The millennials born in the west and have visited Somalia before have not and I don't expect Gen Z, who are even further removed from Somalia, will either. The window of opportunity for improvement was 2000-2020. It's too late. Another issue is that Somalis don't plan for the long-term either and only think about the immediate. They want to benefit now, not later, which is why corruption is so rampant. Somalia will always be poor and hopeless.
I am sick to death of you whiners and negative Nancys. 3 decades of warfare and you write off the whole of Somalia? As if the previous thousands of years of history are wiped out? Somalia is going through rough times now but we are not unique. China went through a century of humiliation + Mao Zedong and they have managed to recover. The Far East was poor sixty years ago now they go toe to toe with Westerners. Have some hope and faith in your motherland.

Somalia isn't China.

East Asia was always going to be successful as long as had stability + markets.

Inshallah once Somalia becomes great again with a functioning government I need the name Somalia to leave along with the "corrupted Somalia" a new name for a change for a fresh start. That's only if we see a massive improvement e.g no more poverty or ajanabis looting our resources.

That was no guarantee.
You can say the same for literally everyone. Any country with stability and great manufacturing can become a great power in 3 decades.

And Somalia wouldn’t? If Somalia had markets and stabilities, we would still be poor? Jeez, I wonder how Mogadishu became the “White Pearl of the Indian Ocean” if we were like that? We need our internal affairs managed by competent people. I know Somalia is in a very rough place but it’s not impossible.

I hate this aspect of our culture. Similar thing happened with my mum when she went back to Hargeisa and Berbera. I’m amazed Al Shabaab hasn’t detonated anything in the North with that lax security. A lot has to change and I wonder if it’s top down or bottom down.

Lol @ comparing the Far East to Somalia. This is what I mean. Somalis will want to shut you up and call you names and try to shame you if you want to dig deeper or have anything other than surface level discussions. "Just make dua. Just have some hope". Yes, we have been doing that for 35 years, even since independence. Can we try something else now like normalizing talking about the root causes no matter how embarassing and no matter how big of a hit it is to your pride? You have to talk about it widely and normalize its discussion if you want to see changes. The country is actually getting poorer as the population is rising much faster than economic growth. Somalis can no longer afford hiding from the truth and difficult conversations. Somalia is entering danger zone with soon to be dropping remittances and governments no longer having an appetite to provide as much aid.

I understand what you're trying to do; you understand the value of truth and its corrective measures, and that without being truthful, your Nation won't recover.

Somalis don't like to hear the truth or address problems and only wish to have hope. Its a coping mechanism passed through generations living in such harsh environments. It should be broken in the diaspora but its just as bad.

I made a post saying that a lot has to change about Somalia. I talk about it to family and on Reddit often. I want Somalia to change and I want Somalia to be a prosperous nation. I have no problem discussing Somalia's issues and I want it to change. I am just tired of people acting like Somalia will never ever prosper and we will always be a poor, backwards nation.

It will always be a poor and backwards nation if the truth is not allowed to be discussed, which is the case with Somalis. It's not hyperbole. Harsh language must be used especially if it's true, otherwise nothing will change.

I agree. A lot must change because we are at real risk of collapsing into the Indian Ocean.

just pass laws that respect personal and property rights, probably triple our gdp.
Exactly, every single rich country respects property rights. It's how you can get buisness and investments going. Somalia could easily be richest in Africa within 8 years if it simply fixes those things, enforce the rule of law, let foreign buisnesses set up factories which creates jobs for somalis and export a shit ton through manufacturing using those factories.
Somalia would be set if those simple things were sorted out.

I wonder how some Somalis back home will survive without remittances we all know second generation ain’t sending nothing back third generation iskaba daa people back home will have hard time adjusting
