I was reading an article on LinkedIn about Yahoo CEO, Marrisa Mayer. According to her 2-weeks paid vacation appears to be an adequate enough time for recovery for a healthy pregnancy and go back to work. Interesting huh, because you can't quite predict what will happen even if you are a healthy individual. In any case, what's your take on this. Is she an automaton. Something tells me AJ would be jumping up in jubilation if this became standard workplace policy everywhere. :gnzbryw: 6-month maternity leave might be too costly for employers since financial forecasts point to a potential global recession in 2016. :mybusiness:

That's unbelievably crazy. You know some mothers experience PTSD after giving birth. I think two weeks is not adequate for the mother to recover both physically and mentally. Also the mother and child need some time to bond.

I'd say 3 months minimum.

A true liberal would scrap maternity leave because A)Gender equality B)Women don't lose out as it won't stunt their growth up the career ladder.

2 weeks? Is she crazy? What about the new born? What is wrong with cadaan women?

:mindblown::mindblown:

Somalis have afartan bax. The next fourty days after birth that woman is considered useless, she cant cook, clean people even give her a bath, even her husband can't touch her. Personally I think two weeks is more than enough

The pain of giving birth is something we males may never get to experience. It looked pretty painful just to see my wife in labor. It's horrific. They have my respect:jgjrrmx:

6 months to 1 year is what, at minimum, women and children need for maternity leave. If it is too costly for employers, a legislation is needed to ensure maternity leave is included in short-term and long-term disability benefits after the first 6 weeks, and the federal and state/provincial governments should help cover the cost, including a guarantee that the mothers will have a job line-up once they finish their maternity leave.

I actually agree with many of you folks. According to the US Family and Medical Leave Act, the minimum required leave is about 3-months. And many American mothers go back to work sooner. In Canada, the minimum is about 4-months, which isn't a substantial leap. I was reading that women that go back to work early are at increased risk of being afflicted with Post Postpartum Depression. In other words, the minimum is woefully inadequate and can be health deleterious. The minimum should actually be increased to over 6-months.

Denmark's maternity leave policy is similar to that of Canada's, it's not radically different. The US is very much behind.

Here in Denmark we even got paternity leave, never mind maternity leave..

High taxes.

We pay higher taxes in the US also but it goes to the military and corporations. America's tax system is the biggest rip-off that ever occurred in the Western world. At least Europe and Canada provide universal healthcare and other support to its citizens. In the US, every time these issues are brought in the US Congress, corporate lobby will prevent. Give credit tio Obama, he at least provided healthcare to the poor.

In a somewhat related story, this American guy was against Obama Health care when it was brought into the US Congress halls. I've asked him if he loses the job, he does not find a job for a whole year, and he suddenly suffers a health condition where the insurance company declares it to be pre-existing condition, how is he going to cover it? He danced around it and eventually accepted that he would not be able to pay for those medical bills.

I have asked him again if the bill comes down to half a million dollars, and doctors take him to court and seize his property and other resources he has since he couldn't afford to pay for those medical bills, how is going to get by after he lost every thing he had? The guy realized that he would lose every thing. I've then asked him since this Obamacare is preventing the insurance companies from denying services due to pre-existing conditions, why would he be against it? He started reverting back to "Obama is a liberal and no goodwill will ever come out of him any thing that is championed by liberals". :cryinglaughsmiley:

Similar to that guy, if you ask American mothers and fathers, we need the maternity-leave for women extended to at least 6 months, many would immediately complain about the higher taxes that it would take to pay for it. If you tell them, well you're already paying higher taxes, so what if tax reform takes places and portion of the 1 trillion USD money that is spent on military is actually allocated to mothers who are having children. Many Americans will respond back angrily and state, "it is up to the parents of those children to pay for it. We're not gonna cut our military. We have after-all the strongest military the world has ever seen."

Similarly, when you ask them if you don't pay for the maternity-leave to mothers who need it, why do you have issues with people who perform abortion? They would immediately respond back, "God wants us to protect life." True, God wants us to protect life, but he also wants to be kind to mothers who just give birth and need to heal and take care of their little babies. They will take shelter "well, where is the father in all of these?" When you tell them let us assume the father is there but since every family has to have one or two cars in order to go to work, since it is an American dream for every family to have a house, do you think 1 income in every American household can take care of all of the bills? They would then revert back to "well, they shouldn't have children if they can't afford it." But you just said no abortion. If you don't want them to perform abortion and you don't want to help them when they have babies, what do you want them to do: No sex, no marriage?

F/ck the Republicans and their stupid mindset. No help to the poor, no help to mothers who just have babies, no universal healthcare, ...no.......,.....no.......,.....no. Brain-dead group of people.

Maternity leave of 1 year should be given and guaranteed by law if the mother wants to do that. But companies and the government shouldn't pay a red cent to any woman taking mat leave. Pay it from your own finances. Taxes are way too high. Now they're going to have universal child care in Canada. Why should we pay for your children's daycare too. Only health care and prescription drugs should be provided.

These entitled mothers are out of control. Its better to live in the United States. Stop having kids if you can't afford mat leave or daycare.

socialism is anti common sense. it creates a sense of entitlement.
Why should someone pay someone else to have a child. the father needs to support his family.

There is some nice things the social democrats have given us: universal health care, publicly funded basic social services and emergency services as well as K-12 education.

But everything else should come out of your own pocket, including high school students who reach 18 but do a victory lap. Those people are just a strain on resources and abuse the system. If you failed to get good grades in your last year, why should I pay for your victory lap? You were given the chance and you blew it by smoking marijuana and partying and wasting your time not studying. Victory laps should be loans or paid in advance.
