1978 - Shah of Iran ready to defend the Somali Republic

Three Moons

Give Dhul-Suwayqatayn not an inch of the Sea!
After the Somali withdrawal from the Ogaden, the Eastern Bloc considered invading Somalia outright and installing a new regime. At the time the Shah of Iran made it clear that he was ready to sent soldiers to defend Somalia.

Egypt expressed the same sentiment, as did Iraq at the time. You see when you respect yourselves, other Nations are willing to die for you;

Shah Mohammed Riza Pahlevi is understood to be deeply worried about Soviet and Cuban influence in the Horn of Africa […] to be contemplating military intervention on the side of the Somali troops to stem the threat from Ethiopia. - NEW YORK TIMES, March 7, 1978

The original article is on the New York Times website under the title;

‘Iranian Says His Nation Will Defend Somalia If Ethiopia Invades’

He was not a great leader but at least under he's rule sunnis were not persecuted. We would have had an embassy in Iran if he wasn't toppled

Gtfo out here, these Shiites did not give a shit

Honestly the only middle Eastern or Muslim leader that was willing was none other than the Great Saddam Hussein

He was a staunch anti-communist, too bad he was losing legitimacy by then. He was friends with fellow anti-com haile selassie

At the same time the saint of Somali diaspora yasir arafat was in addis saying Somalia is rightful Ethiopian clay

(if you wonder why Eritrea doesn’t recognise Palestine that’s why)

We didn’t need him to defend Somalia if it was invaded we needed him to send us tanks to fight in Galbeed. No wonder Khomeni overthrew this coward

A country will think of its own interests before others. If Iran had sent Somalia military hardware during Carter’s administration, the Iranians themselves would be taken off the list of nations favourably supplied with U.S. technology and possibly even sanctioned since the Americans at the time considered us aggressors and not liberators.

Exactly no one helps other countries because of love it’s just business 😂
