These were two different Eras in Somalia. One was the hip, urban culture of Mogadishu. Clicks and class system implemented, very American like. People outside this hip city would be referred to as bush people and isolated from joining the ranks. Family ties were also important indicating you were of 'suitable' rank to them. Great points about this era. No qabiil but your rural/urban discrimination was prevalent.
1969 - 1991 - Siyad blasts in and says No more clicks, class system(amiko), somalis urban/rural are one, pick up your taag-daran brother not isolate him. Follows the somali anthem too the 'tee'. Negative points. Disgruntled people feeling undeserving people were in charge of them while they worked hard to get what they have. Hence Bush people rose greatly in this era, minority clans, etc.
So which Somalia is better? the no tribe family connections and friendship networks based on 'are u reer magaal'? or the Socialist utopia all equal somalis no matter your status in society?
My dad said he entered both eras and saw monumental shifts and is still undecided what was best for Somalia as a whole. He said he can relate to siyad barre because he was from nugaal and it was BUSH, so he knows what he was coming from. But he can also relate to urban culture saying you must EARN your way into respect and our class because they all had to the same.
He said his clan osman mahmoud never did nothing for him when he was in mogadishu and abgaal helped him cause tribal allegiance didn't exist, it was like america were your european but that it's at an identity level lakin waxba kuma helaysid. He said he had to start from the bottom and make friends, socialize, impress people, study and work hard. Repay his debts to his 'host' who took him in Mogadishu. But he knew some of the country people like him were not adapting and falling thru the cracks of the system, especially reer waqoyi. Some of them later adapted like cisman kaluun and developed his network and knew about the urban culture vs rural attitudes.
Because maybe their families didn't teach them when they go to the city u need to adapt and make a name for yourself there and your family not bring our rural culture there which it won't work. But he said if you failed in the old society it was because of yourself not adapting. However he said the siyad era saw the rise of people who didn't deserve what they have based on being 'somali' iyo the idea of 'wax baan xeerinaya' which my dad is still wondering what siyad mean when he told him that, he is taking guesses but he still is adamant odayga wala fahmi wayay, even himself. Which may mean he knew more what he was doing and u should just go back to your job and don't worry about the nation plan.
Just because u fail to understand the wisdom behind someone thinking or policy, doesnt mean he is wrong automatically, so he said siyad barre a fair discussion and review baa loo bahan yahay ma aha kan mugdiga ah iyo dictator buu ahaa image circulating. Then the nation fell into civil war he said. He said that's why he still is wondering what the guy was on about with his somali wide we are all equal card and merit and skill doesn't matter.
Anyways all Somalia was bush abck then except a few cities, so if you outside mog-kismayo u were considered rural and bush people. So my dad said he understood siyad because miyi wuu ka yimi, but he also understood urban culture because his father taught him the difference before he went to the city.
Somalida they were never direct before, wax kasto was diplomatically said, it's up to u to figure it out basically and if u do to impress them u understood if u didn't nabnaab baad iska ahayd. So siyad didnt take his advice to remove the guy above him, so he said there must be something i didnt understand in his wisdom.
