Somali presidential candidates push regional leaders to replace biased election committee members

Last night, several candidates vying for Somalia’s 8 February 2020/21 presidential election held a meeting with the Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qor Qor), asking him to revoke two members he appointed to represent Galmudug in the national election implementation committee.
Opposition parties had previously accused the named representatives of being supporters of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

Candidates at the meeting included former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Wadajir Party Leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame and former Information Minister Dahir Mohamed Gelle.
According to reports, the Galmudug leader challenged the opposition candidates on why he was being singled out given that all other regional presidents had appointed people who work at their offices to represent them in the national elections committee.

However, he said he will take their complaints into consideration and might discuss possible solutions to their concerns with the central government leadership, according to sources informed on the matter.

The Galmudug leader had also promised to extend an invitation to the opposition candidates for a meeting with him soon.
The opposition presidential candidates are also expected to hold a similar meeting with the President of the Hirshabelle State Ali Gudlawe, of whom they are also expected to request a revocation of his appointed representatives to the elections committee.
