''The Wema Danakil (Afar) have 100 Somali archers, originally prisoners taken in their wars with different Somali tribes: though considered as incorporated with their masters, they still preserve their native language, and never intermarry with the Danakil, by whom they are employed, because that people is said to believe shooting with bows and arrows to be unlawful.''
