Well it is bad if the inventory part of the Somali language is gone by the constant use of Arabic and English. The inventory unit, also known as ''Eray-Bixin'' is important in the development and integration of Af-Somali into modernity. In so far as our language is capable in expressing scientific, intellectual and technical concepts.
I found that we use many unnecessary English especially ''Arabic'' loan words that we have already have native words for in our language in our everyday interactions. So thats is a huge sign of decay.
It is a concern that we for example use arabic week days and months instead of Somali ones.
The diaspora population is small but it isn't insignificant since the country is and will still be in the future heavily dependent on the contribution of the diaspora.
Preserving the language should be the number one priority for the Somali diaspora. It will be a major loss if western educated Somalis lose connection and stop contributing to the homeland.

Unfortunately this is a reality for 2nd generation somalis. We came here fleeing war and were not able to build good institutions over a long period of time like other ethnic groups. Not much can be seriously done now either until we have a strong government and country.

Many somalis are dependent on their family in the diaspora because of unemployment and lack of oportunities. Once the economy starts seriously recovering and there are a lot of jobs, they'll stop depending on their family in qurbaha. This is a short term problem that can be easily fixed over time.
There should be a community effort to teach Somali. We can open Somali classes to teach kids and adults who don't know the language. Also have Somali cultural events promoting language and culture.
This should've been done during the 90s when our parents came to the west but it's still not too late.

Somali is nowhere near being even endangered. It is actually thriving and is one of the few non-European langauges in written use in Sub-Saharan Africa. The best days of our language are still ahead.
We are very lucky to be so homogeneous, we can make everyone in our country literate in a decade if we really tried hard.

I've started asking my parents to teach me more. I also have a small note pad where I write down every new word and it's meaning. I don't think the Somali language is dying language develops.

The Somali language is spoken by over 15 million people. Anyone who seriously thinks that the Somali language is under threat, is highly delusional.
However, if you're worried about any transformation the language is going to take, then I'm sorry but there's nothing you can really do about it. Languages evolve and evolve. Barely anybody can understand Shakespearean English but nobody will deny it's English. We're not the only things that evolve, languages, cultures and even nations evolve.

What about Af Maay though? They are borderline a completely different language and something like 1 in 5 people in Somalia speak it as a native language. It's a threat to the Somali language more than anything else.
Maymay will be eliminated in due time, it does not have the backing of the federal government. Even in Baydhabo elementary school children are taught only real Af Somali not some disgusting half oromo dialect. Maymay is an island in a sea of Af Somali, it will probably disappear in two generations.

The only danger that's facing the Somali language is the ditzy retarded fish and chips Somali youths with the "Hodan Naleyeh" Syndrom, who think that ' Not being able to speak their own mother tongue is somewhat fashionable and trendy....Normal people tend to be very ashamed and apprehensive about readily admitting that they cant understand and communicate with your own mother. Smh walahi.
