For us who has not been in the U.S

Can you yanks please explain this whole tipping thing. All I have known all my life is going to restaurant, looking at the menu and pay for the price of meal. But it seems you have unwritten rules that you supposed to give tip because their employer don’t want to give reasonable wage. What happens if you don’t except weird looks and guilt trip?

If you cant afford to tip, go to McDonalds..
This is the shaming thing I talked about. Why not just set certain price and let their employer pay them. Do restaurants say if you not tipping don’t eat here?

you tip them because they're basically slaves. the amount the business owner pays them+tips=a barely liveable wage

so they counting on guilt tripping customers? If I eat for 30 dollars. How much am I expected to pay?

The employers pocket most of their money they just get table scraps(no pun intended) I dont know how much you have to pay there's usually no set amount so anything helps, but I usually pay around $1-5 dollars when I eat out at a resturaunt.

@Jaydaan

If your not frequently visiting restaurants. Adding 7 to 10bucks on your bill for good service isn't going too kill your wallet.

By complaining, your essentially telling others your cheap or worse broke

so you think it’s the right way to run a restaurant where you give your employers peanuts and guilt trip customers? They don’t do this in Europe. Also what difference would it make if some waiter think I’m broke. My question is what happens if you don’t tip?

Bad service next time if your a regular, otherwise technically nothing other than looking broke although in many places the tip is included in the bill Try tipping 100, feels real good and you get a good reaction

Lol, being a waiter is not like being a mechanic or doctor. You are what your worth, in this capitalism world, and being a waiter is bottom teir job.

It's just polite to do so. I rather the waiters that take my order be like he tipped great last time, and not fck with my food.

Tipping is entirely your choice. You can choose to feel guilty and pay or you can just eat your food then pay for the meal and then leave.

The system is outdated in first world country. Even in Somalia this don’t happen.

Somalia has no record of human right. I think tipping is a wonderful human right practice. Firstly, it makes u generous, Very Islamic, Secondly, u make their day.

thirdly, its a practice that controls my easting out a lot. Sometime I would cancel eating out in restaurant if I don't have good tipping money, so when I go to the restaurant I tip good lol

I don't get it should your employer not pay you enough? There isn't anything humane about this.

I always knew @Jaydaan was broke, he doesn't even live in the U.S but he's complaining about tipping.
Seriously don’t you think the method is stupid. Like I said they don’t use it in rest of the western world. I’m bringing up workers being exploited and think they should have fair wage. People defend the exploiters saying you just poor. Very weird

Who cares about the “western world”, obviously America’s different , and how are they being exploited? They get the minimum wage of 15 an hour, more than good professions in the “western world” if you include the tips, which is why tips are something workers love, customers like it too as it’s a medium for showing evaluation, if bad service you pay zero tip, thus making workers incentivized to give you best and nicest service possible

Tips are critical if you have a good server/waiter - some go over and beyond with making sure your order is perfect, getting you lots of water, appetizers, etc.

You're free not to tip, just don't eat at that restaurant for a while if you don't want them to add a little something extra to your food next time
